HAMDEN, Conn. – Junior No. 1 doubles team Rachel Cantor (Short Hills, N.J.) and Sarah Viebrock (Carmel, N.Y.) improved to 11-2 on the season on a beautiful Sunday afternoon, but the Quinnipiac University women's tennis team dropped a non-conference match to Atlantic 10 foe UMass, 6-1, at the QU Outdoor Tennis Courts.
With the loss, the Bobcats fell to 7-11 overall as the team nears the end of its daunting 2012 schedule. The Minutemen improved to 13-7 on the season, which now includes a six game winning streak.
Quinnipiac nearly snatched an early lead in this one, as the doubles segment came down to the wire. Cantor and Viebrock cruised past Yuliana Motyl and Jocelyn Providence, 8-2, in No. 1, leaving QU in search for one other victory. However, in two tightly played matches, the Minutemen prevailed in the No. 2 and No. 3 flights to take the point and a 1-0 lead.
After the intermission, UMass fared well in singles competition as well. Cantor took the lone point for the Bobcats, as she moved into double digits in wins for the year. She topped Motyl, 7-5, 6-4, in No. 1. Michelle Dassa (Marlboro, N.J.) and Jacqueline Raynor (Garden City, N.Y.) put together strong outings, but both fell in three sets.
Quinnipiac remains at home for its next match, as the Bobcats welcome Fairfield to the QU Outdoor Tennis Courts on Tuesday afternoon. First serve is set for 3 p.m. For all of the latest news, scores and highlights pertaining to the women's tennis program, please visit www.QuinnipiacBobcats.com.
