HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac University women's tennis team won every match against Saint Francis (Pa.) in its Northeast Conference opener on Sunday afternoon. The Bobcats, who were recently selected to finish atop the NEC in the preseason poll, jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. With the win, QU improves to 1-2 overall and 1-0 in league play.
"It's always great to begin conference competition with a win," said Head Coach Mike Quitko. "Saint Francis (Pa.) has improved vastly since last season and I am happy to come away with our first W."
The Bobcats began the morning with a three-game sweep in the doubles' segment. The No. 1 duo of Michelle Dassa (Marlboro, N.J.) and Jacqueline Raynor (Garden City, N.Y.) kicked off the competition with an 8-6 decision over Alex Sachs and Lucy Jasso. Rachel Cantor (Short Hills, N.J.) and Sarah Viebrock (Carmel, N.Y.) teamed up to defeat Shivani Patel and Nuria Valls in the No. 2 slot (8-3), while Ariana Launie (Milton, Mass.) and Lavinia Cristescu (West Hartford, Conn.) completed the doubles' sweep with an 8-1 triumph over Devynn Sarver and Laura Husband.
Quinnipiac picked up right where they left off in singles' competition, as the Bobcats needed just two sets in every match but one. Cantor, Raynor, Viebrock, Dassa, Launie and Cristescu each collected their first conference win of the young season.
Saint Francis (Pa.), now 2-9 overall and 0-1 in conference play, will head to Robert Morris on March 17.
Quinnipiac returns to the court on Friday, March 2 with a match against Marist. The event will take place at Army, with the first serve scheduled for 4 p.m. For all information regarding the women's tennis program, please visit www.QuinnipiacBobcats.com.
