NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Junior Rachel Cantor (Short Hills, N.J.) of the Quinnipiac University women's tennis team opened the main singles' draw with a win on Saturday afternoon, as the Bobcats took part in day two of the USTA/ITA Division I Women's Northeast Regional Championships at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center on the campus of Yale University.
Head coach Mike Quitko was pleased with the team's effort as the Bobcats went up against some of the region's most talented athletes. He remarked after the tournament, "Overall, I was satisfied of our performances in the tournament. ITA's always provides an elite field, making us better as we progress towards our spring season."
In the main singles' draw, Cantor defeated Cornell's Sarah O'Neil to advance to the second round of the bracket. In her next match, Cantor fell to Boston College's Katarina Gajic, who earned a first-round bye, 6-1, 6-2, and was eliminated from contention.
Sophomore Juliet Labarthe (Oklahoma City, Okla.) drew Monika Graf of NJIT in the opening round of the main singles' draw. Labarthe was defeated by Graf, 6-3, 6-4 in the match. With two wins, Labarthe would have faced off against Vanessa Petrini of Rutgers, the sister of freshman standout John Petrini of the QU men's tennis team.
The remaining twosome in doubles' play, freshmen Jacqueline Raynor (Garden City, N.Y.) and Michelle Dassa (Marlboro, N.J.), were ousted in the second round by Cornell University. Christine Ordway and Sarah O'Neil defeated Raynor and Dassa, 8-5.
The Bobcats will enjoy quite some time off to prepare for the spring season. The team will not return to the court until February 10, 2012 at Rutgers University. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m.
