HAMDEN, Conn. - Quinnipiac University women's tennis sophomore Rachel Cantor (Short Hills, N.J.) and freshman Juliet Labarthe (Oklahoma City, Okla.) have been named the Northeast Conference Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively, the league office today announced. The award is the third of the year for Cantor, and the eighth for Labarthe.
Cantor was a perfect 4-0 on the week, including No. 1 singles victories against Villanova's Mikelle Mancini and Sacred Heart's Kate Donnelly. Cantor defeated Donnelly, 6-2, 6-2, Thursday, before outlasting Mancini, 7-6 (12-10), 6-3, on Monday. Cantor also paired with Adrienne Markison (Princeton, N.J.) to defeat Sacred Heart's Elizabeth Harrington and Kristina Chao, 8-1, and Villanova's Allison Solberg and Alexandra Harding, 8-5. Cantor has now won four of her last five singles matches.
Labarthe went 4-0 this week. Facing the player who ended her four-week ownership of the NEC Rookie of the Week award last week, Labarthe produced a convincing 6-1, 6-1, victory against Sacred Heart's Gabi Kaldan. Labarthe then defeated Villanova's Alexandra Harding, 6-2, 6-3. She also paired with Sarah Viebrock (Carmel, N.Y.) at No. 1 doubles to defeat Sacred Heart's Kaldan and Darcy Demers, 8-4, as well as Villanova's Mancini and Kristin Gobberg, 8-5. The four wins push Labarthe's season total to 42, surpassing Mary Wilson's previous Quinnipiac Division I freshman record of 40 victories.
The Bobcats return to action Friday, when they begin play in the Northeast Conference Tournament against either eight-seeded Saint Francis (Pa.) or ninth-seeded Wagner. First serve from Mercer County Park in West Windsor, N.J., will take place after 4:30 p.m.
