Conn. - Quinnipiac University freshman Juliet Labarthe (Oklahoma
City, Okla.) has been named the Northeast Conference Women's Tennis
Player and Rookie of the Week, the league office today announced.
The freshman has now won five NEC Rookie of the Week Awards, and
two player of the week honors. She closes to within one honor of
teammate Rachel Cantor's (Short Hills, N.J.) record of six NEC
Rookie of the Week Awards, and becomes the first freshman to win
two NEC Player of the Week honors. Labarthe posted an unblemished
week, going 4-0 to improve her season record to 26-6.
Juliet Labarthe Earns Fifth NEC Rookie of the Week, Second Player of the Week
Labarthe's four wins pushed her winning streak to 10 straight matches, including five each in singles and doubles. She barely broke a sweat at No. 3 singles, defeating Northern Iowa's Lara Okicki, 6-3, 6-0, and Western Illinois' Amy Unzicker, 6-0, 6-2.
She also paired with Sarah Viebrock to defeat Northern Iowa's Jessica Kunzelmann and Krissy Lankelma, 8-4, at No. 2 doubles, before the pair got bumped up to No. 1, where they thumped Marcela Brandao and Jill Furlong, 8-0. On the season, the freshman ended the week with a remarkable 13-3 mark in both singles and doubles.
