Women's Tennis Falls To LIU, 4-1, In NEC Semifinals

WEST WINDSOR, N.J. - Adrienne Markison (Princeton, N.J.) was a double winner, but the third-seeded Quinnipiac University women's tennis team was defeated by No. 2 Long Island, 4-1, in the Northeast Conference Tournament Semifinals at Mercer County Tennis Center. With the loss, the Bobcats conclude their season at 9-8. The loss also snapped the Bobcats' 10-year streak of advancing to the conference championship match.

Markison paired with Mary Wilson (Greensburg, Pa.) on an 8-4 victory at No. 1 doubles over Selma Babic and Aleksandra Pavlovic. But the Bobcats were beaten for the doubles point at No. 2 and 3. After freshmen Rachel Cantor (Short Hills, N.J.) and Sarah Viebrock (Carmel, N.Y.) fell at No. 2, 8-6, to Taysha Blessington and H'Ann Johnson, Shawna Sarson (Albany, N.Y.) and Natalie Duckor (North Tustin, Calif.) were outlasted at No. 3, 9-8, by Stephanie Elie and Dara Lahens.

Markison quickly evened the score with a 6-1, 6-1, decision over Pavlovic at No. 3, but the Blackbirds took the next three points and the victory. Blessington defeated Viebrock, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 4, before Johnson defeated Duckor, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 5. Babic clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-4, victory over Wilson at No. 1.

Both Cantor and Lisanne Steinert (Glauchau, Germany) won their first sets before matches were halted in the second. Cantor won the first set against Linn Sjogren, 6-4, before the players were deadlocked at 4-4 in the second. Steinert won the first set against Elie, 6-4, before trailing, 3-1, in the second.
