HAMDEN, Conn. - Freshman Sarah Viebrock (Carmel, N.Y.) defeated Abby McKeon in a third-set tiebreaker as the Quinnipiac University women's tennis team edged the University of Connecticut, 4-3, Tuesday afternoon. Rain forced the final few games of Viebrock and McKeon's third set onto the Quinnipiac Indoor Courts. With the win, the Bobcats improve to 1-0 on the season, while the Huskies fall to 1-2.
Senior Mary Wilson (Greensburg, Pa.) and freshman Rachel Cantor (Short Hills, N.J.) were double winners for the Bobcats. The duo paired to defeat Kelley LoRusso and Ali Campitiello, 8-4, at No. 1 doubles. Wilson then made quick work of LoRusso, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 1 singles, while Cantor one-upped her senior teammate with a 6-0, 6-1, win over Emily Herb at No. 2.
The Huskies won the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3, putting the Bobcats' behind going into singles. Following Wilson and Cantor's wins, Adrienne Markison (Princeton, N.J.) put the Bobcats within one win of clinching the match with a 6-1, 6-2, win against Campitiello at No. 3. But UConn fought back to win at No. 4 and 5 to pull the even with Quinnipiac.
Viebrock took the first set against McKeon, 7-5, before falling, 6-1, in the second. Deadlocked at 6-6 in the decisive third set, Viebrock earned a 7-3 win in the tiebreaker and clinched the match for the Bobcats.
The Bobcats' top players return to action Friday, Oct. 23, at the ITA Northeast Regional Championships, hosted by Yale.
