HAMDEN, Conn. - Quinnipiac University freshmen tennis players Rachel Cantor (Short Hills, N.J.) and Andrew Weeden (Martinsville, N.J.) have been named the Northeast Conference Rookies of the Week, the league office today announced. Cantor earns the award a week after taking NEC Player and Rookie of the Week, while Weeden's honor is the first of his career.
Cantor had a strong showing at the West Point Eastern Tennis Invitational, advancing to the 2nd Singles Quarterfinals. She beat West Virginia's Emily Mathis convincingly, 6-3, 6-1, in the quarterfinals after receiving an opening-round bye as the No. 3 seed. The freshman was then defeated by sixth-seeded Erin Colton (Army) in the quarterfinals, 7-6, 6-0. Cantor is now 9-3 on the year.
Playing his first collegiate singles matches, Weeden won the Flight B Singles Championship at the UConn Invitational. After outlasting Bucknell's Kelly Morque, 6-3, 4-6, 10-7, in the Round of 16, Weeden dropped only six more games in the next three matches to cruise to the B Singles Championship. The freshman beat Sacred Heart's Jacob Miller, 6-1, 6-1, in the quarterfinals, followed by a 6-2, 6-1, win against Bryant's Nicholai Hill in the semifinals. In the finals, Weeden was up 4-1 in the first set before teammate James Kwei (Dedham, Mass/Dedham) retired due to fatigue. Weeden is now 7-2 in his young career.
The Quinnipiac men's tennis team returns to action Oct. 9, when they play host to the Quinnipiac Invitational. Meanwhile, the Bobcats' women's team returns to the courts on Oct. 13, when they play their first dual match of the season against UConn.
