HAMDEN, Conn. - Quinnipiac University women's tennis freshman Rachel Cantor (Short Hills, N.J.) has been named the Northeast Conference Women's Tennis Player and Rookie of the Week, the league office today announced. Cantor won the top singles flight in her singles debut this past weekend at the Quinnipiac Invitational. The awards are the first of Cantor's collegiate career.
Cantor won four straight matches to earn the A Singles Flight Championship at the Quinnipiac Invitational. She began her singles career with a 6-2, 6-1 win against Sacred Heart's Kate Donnelly, before outlasting the second-seeded player in the tournament, Connecticut's Kelley LoRusso, 6-7, 6-1, 10-2 in the quarterfinals.
Cantor then breezed through the semifinals and finals with a 6-3, 6-0 win against Army's Paige Ford, followed by a 6-1, 6-2 victory against another Black Knight, Annie Hang, to earn the championship.
In doubles action, Cantor and teammate Mary Wilson won their first two matches against Army's Hang and Audrey Hansen (8-5) and Sacred Heart's Donnelly and Rebecca McMullin (8-2). They then fell in the semifinals to UConn's LoRusso and Abby McKeon, 8-5. Cantor is now 8-2 overall in her young collegiate career.
The Bobcats return to action Friday, when they take part in the Eastern Collegiate Championships at Army. Matches from West Point, N.Y., are scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
