HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac women's soccer program worked in conjunction with the Intramurals Department and hosted the Fifth Annual 4v4 Soccer Tournament on Saturday, May 3, 2014. This year the proceeds supported Vaatjie Mor Primary School in South Africa where members of the men's and women's soccer teams held soccer clinics in January.
Vaatjie Primary School is located in Atlantis, a province approximately 30 minutes outside of Cape Town city center. Several Quinnipiac students, including many of members of the men's and women's soccer programs, worked with the Tippy Toes Foundation to conduct a week long holiday camp for the students at Vaatjie Primary School back in January. The camp included soccer and dance activities, but also focused on reinforcing the importance of education for the students because school is their best opportunity for a better future.
What People Are Saying About This Year's Soccer Tournament…
"The 4v4 tournament has become a popular year end event to raise money for various causes. The proceeds of this year's event were used for the Vaatjie Soccer Camp in Cape Town, South Africa where the men's and women's programs sent volunteers last January. It is a cause that now means a lot to both programs, so we greatly appreciated the support of the student body for the event." – Quinnipiac Women's Soccer Head Coach Dave Clarke
"The Quinnipiac University Intramural Department is excited for another successful 4v4 Soccer Tournament. We appreciate those who came out and helped support South African students in conjunction with our women's soccer team. We look forward to next year's event where we will team up to raise money for another worthy cause." – Quinnipiac Associate Athletic Director/Intramurals Mike Medina
"Taylor and I had the opportunity to travel to South Africa in January 2014 where we along with 10 other students and the men's and women's head soccer coaches hosted a weeklong summer camp at Vaatjie Primary School. This camp provided the children with opportunities for them to be engaged outside of their home environments through dance, soccer, arts and crafts and much more. I fell in love with the land, in love with the people, in love with the children whom I think of each and every day, and the passionate people who are fighting to make life better for those most in need. Soccer is a universal language and it is through this sport that we plan to raise money to donate to the school and its programs." – Quinnipiac Women's Soccer Junior Kat Young
"This sport has impacted my life more than I could ever really comprehend and that's what this year's 4v4 tournament was all about. Having traveled with Kat and Dave to South Africa and seeing the impact the soccer has on all of these kids was huge for us. The kids we met play on sand, sticks, and rocks, most of them barefoot and they absolutely love it; soccer is their outlet from everything negative in their lives. This tournament used the sport that brought me, Kat and Dave to get to know these kids and allowed us to be able to contribute back to them with what soccer has given us - an education. Vaatjie Mor Primary School has the potential to help these kids grow to be anything they want and this fundraiser will aid Vaatjie in moving closer to its potential."
