HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac University women's soccer team suffered an unsettling setback on Tuesday afternoon, as the Bobcats dropped an NEC match-up to Sacred Heart, 1-0, at the QU Soccer Field on Mount Carmel Campus. With the loss, Quinnipiac falls 8-5-2 overall - but more importantly descends to 4-3-1 in the Northeast Conference and three points behind the Pioneers in the standings.

Sacred Heart, now 8-8-1 overall, 5-3-1 in league competition, collected the game-winner just five minutes into the second stanza. After a scoreless first half, the Pioneers used a bit of luck to garner the go-ahead goal in the 50th minute of play. The ball made its way deep into the QU zone; where senior goalkeeper Jill Kelley (Simsbury, Conn.) found herself surrounded by the Pioneer attack. Kelley made an initial save, but the ball deflected right to Dana Cosmedy who knocked the ball into the back of the net for her fourth goal of the campaign.

"It was a silly free kick to give away and then we didn't deal with the ball well when it got into the penalty area," said head coach Dave Clarke. "A lot of our players stopped looking for a hand ball but you can't stop, you have to finish the play. After a couple ricochets we couldn't clear it and they had the goal."

Nonetheless, the Bobcats wouldn't go away and pressed forward in search of the equalizer. With less than 20 minutes remaining, sophomore Kat Young (Fairfield, Conn.) sent a cross from the right-side to the center of the field. Fellow classmate Christina Cesarini (Garden City, N.Y.) then headed the ball behind her to a wide-open teammate, Crystal Burns (Overland Park, Kan.). The senior took two touches and lined up for a 20-yard blast from outside of the penalty area. Burns beat Pioneer goalkeeper Sydney Judkins, but unfortunately her shot sailed wide to the left and out for a goal-kick.

Quinnipiac continued to press late, evidenced by a 7-5 advantage in shots for the second half. Unfortunately, Sacred Heart buckled down defensively and managed to escape with the win and the three points. Judkins earned her third shutout of the season at the strength of three saves, two coming in the second half. Kelley turned away two shots in the losing effort for the Bobcats.

For the game, Quinnipiac outshot Sacred Heart, 10-7, and surrendered a 3-1 edge in corner kicks. Quinnipiac falls to 4-7-4 in the all-time against the Pioneers, a rivalry that dates back to the 1990 season.

The Bobcats are back in action with a pair of NEC games in Pennsylvania next weekend. QU takes on Robert Morris on Friday afternoon, before heading to first-place Saint Francis (Pa.) on Sunday.
