HAMDEN, Conn. – Junior Beck Kiting (Canberra, Australia) scored in the sixth minute of the second overtime period on Sunday afternoon, as the Quinnipiac University women's soccer team topped Northeast Conference foe Mount St. Mary's, 3-2, in thrilling fashion on Senior Day at the QU Soccer Field on Mount Carmel Campus. Kiting's fifth career goal served as the golden goal, lifting the Bobcats to their fourth NEC win of the season.
"When you play a 10-game schedule, every game has huge importance," said head coach Dave Clarke, who picked up career win #118 with the Bobcats. "If we had lost, we probably fall into a tie for seventh place in the standings. Now we have a huge game against Sacred Heart on Friday, and with a win moves us into great position to make the playoffs, which is the goal all along."
Quinnipiac, now 8-4-2 overall and 4-2-1 in league play, persevered through a very physical game and came through when it mattered most. Midway through the second overtime, the Bobcats worked the ball into Mount St. Mary's defensive zone and earned a corner kick after a deflection off of a Mountaineers' defender. Senior Crystal Burns (Overland Park, Kan.) whipped in a right-footed cross from the left corner that sailed into the middle of the penalty box. Kiting dashed towards the ball, timed her jump perfectly, and smashed a header past Mount St. Mary's Vicky Cocozza for the game-winning goal.
For the game, Quinnipiac outshot Mount St. Mary's, 11-5, and controlled a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks. The game consisted of 38 fouls and five yellow cards.
Senior Jill Kelley (Simsbury, Conn.) was tremendous in goal for the Bobcats, making two big saves in her sixth clean sheet of the season. MSM's Rachel Bourne and Cocozza combined for four saves in the losing effort.
With the win, Quinnipiac improved to 9-2-3 all-time against the Mountaineers.
The Bobcats are back in action on Friday, October 19 with their final home game of the regular season. QU welcomes intrastate rival to Mount Carmel Campus for a 2 p.m. tilt at the QU Soccer Field.
