Women's Soccer Suffers First NEC Setback; Falls Short To Monmouth, 1-0
HAMDEN, Conn. – Fresh off an impressive draw with 2011 NEC Champion LIU Brooklyn on Friday night, the Quinnipiac University women's soccer team looked to carry its momentum into Sunday afternoon as two unbeaten teams squared off at the QU Soccer Field on Mount Carmel Campus. Unfortunately, the Monmouth University Hawks prevailed with a 1-0 victory in the Northeast Conference clash.
With the loss, the Bobcats fall to 6-3-2 overall and 2-1-1 in NEC competition. The three-game unbeaten streak in conference action was the longest since 2007 for the Bobcats. The visiting Hawks improve to 7-4-1, 4-0 in league play.
Monmouth used Monique Plescia's third goal of the season to take a 1-0 lead before the half. Claudio Vazquez carried the ball through the Quinnipiac defense before firing a shot on goal. Quinnipiac goalkeeper Jillian Kelley (Simsbury, Conn.) made a diving stab at the ball, knocking away Vazquez's strike. Plescia, waiting patiently for the rebound, collected the loose ball and punched it into the back of the net to give the Hawks a one-goal advantage.
Offense did not come easy for the Bobcats, as the home team garnered just three shots (one on target) in the opening stanza. Plescia's goal served as the lone goal in the half, leaving a 1-0 lead at the break.
After the intermission, Quinnipiac picked up the intensity in search for the equalizer. The Bobcats mustered four shots in the stanza, but only one managed to find the target. QU's best chance came late in the contest, when Shannon Larkin (Burlington, Conn.) and Shauna Edwards (Southington, Conn.) nearly connected on a corner kick. Larkin whipped a cross into middle of the box, where Edwards' struck a header towards net. Unfortunately her attempt sailed over the crossbar and out for a goal kick.
Monmouth's defense clamped down in the waning minutes en route to its second road win of the season. The loss was just QU's second at home this fall.
The Hawks controlled a 10-7 edge in shots, while the Bobcats grasped a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks. Kelley made three saves and her counterpart, Jocelyn McCoy turned aside two in the match.
Quinnipiac returns to the pitch with two away games next weekend. On Friday, October 5, the Bobcats travel to Wagner College, followed by a trip to Bryant University on Sunday. Both games will begin at 3 p.m.
