LOUNDONVILLE, N.Y. – Senior goalkeeper Jill Kelley (Simsbury, Conn.) registered three saves on Sunday afternoon, but an overtime goal in the 92nd minute proved to be the difference as the Quinnipiac University women's soccer team suffered a 1-0 loss at Siena College in Loudonville, N.Y. With the loss, the Bobcats drop to 4-2-1 on the season, while the hosting Saints improve to 2-4 in non-conference competition.
"I thought it was our best performance of the season to date and in no way did we deserve to lose the game," said head coach Dave Clarke. "We were the better team, played the better soccer and created the better chances. We were unfortunate in the manner in which we lost, but will take a lot more positives from this performance than any other game so far this season."
After two scoreless halves of soccer, Siena delivered the game-winning tally just two minutes into the first period of overtime. Kelly Ristoff lifted a ball over the Bobcats' backline which found its way to a wide-open Brittany Pfaff. Pfaff took a few touches towards net and ripped a shot into the upper corner on the far post for the thrilling triumph.
Quinnipiac controlled much of the possession throughout the contest, generating a 13-8 advantage in shots and a 7-1 edge in corner kicks. The Bobcats put five of their 13 shots on target compared to just four from the hosting Saints. The physical game featured 20 total fouls and two cautions.
Kelley played well between the posts, turn aside three shots in the losing effort. Siena's Taylor Booth made five saves in her second win of the campaign.
Now with the non-conference slate in the rearview mirror, Quinnipiac looks ahead to the all-important Northeast Conference schedule. The Bobcats open NEC competition with Fairleigh Dickinson on Friday, September 21 at the QU Soccer Field. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
