Bobcats Play Rescheduled NEC Game
The Quinnipiac women’s soccer team will play a rescheduled Northeast Conference game against Long Island University on Tuesday, Oct. 18 at 3 p.m. at the Quinnipiac Soccer Field in Hamden, Conn. The Bobcats enter the match at 3-7-1 overall and 2-3 in the NEC, while the Blackbirds stand at 7-7 on the year and 4-2 in league action.

Scouting Long Island
Long Island enters Friday’s match-up at 4-2 in the NEC after winning three consecutive conference games. Following wins against Bryant, 4-1, and Wagner, 2-1, the Blackbirds defeated Central Connecticut State, 1-0, in overtime on Sunday, Oct. 16. Long Island’s Jen Spicer scored the game-winner on an assist from Ariana Calderon in the 99th minute of play. The Blackbirds’ junior goalie Jennifer Bannon, made seven saves in the NEC win and currently ranks sixth amongst conference goalies with 51 saves overall. Long Island’s Calderon and Spicer rank third and fourth, respectively, in the NEC in points. Calderon has tallied 17 points, while Spicer has compiled 15 points in 2011. Both players also lead the Blackbirds in goals, with 13 goals combined.

All-Time Against The Blackbirds
Quinnipiac holds an all-time record of 6-6-2 with Long Island. The Bobcats lead the series at home, 4-2. Last season, Quinnipiac tied the Blackbirds, 0-0, in double overtime at LIU.

Last Time Out
Quinnipiac lost to NEC opponent, Wagner College, 1-0, in its most recent outing. The Bobcats dropped to 2-3 in conference play with the loss.

Leading Ladies
Quinnipiac senior Furtuna Velaj leads the Bobcats with a team-high 11 points and five goals this year. Junior Shauna Edwards is ranked second in points (7), but leads the team with three assists. Edwards, sophomore Beck Kiting and senior Kristina Del Mistro, have each scored two goals this season.

Reaching For 100
The Bobcats’ Furtuna Velaj currently posts 91 career points. In addition to this year’s 11 points, Velaj compiled 19 points in her junior year. The forward also tallied 30 points in 2009 and 31 points as a freshman.

Three Musketeers
Furtuna Velaj, freshman Jess Lavoie and senior Kyla Miles are the only Bobcats to have appeared and started in each of the Bobcats’ 11 games this year.

Conference Standings
Quinnipiac is currently tied with Central Connecticut State and Mount St. Mary’s, for eighth in the NEC standings with six points each. St. Francis (Pa.) remains undefeated in first place with 16 points, while Monmouth holds the second position with 15 points. Long Island stands in third with 12 points, followed by Sacred Heart with 10 points and Robert Morris and Wagner, each with nine points on the year. Bryant is in the seventh slot with seven points, while Fairleigh Dickinson stands alone in 11th place with three points.

NEC Notes
Quinnipiac’s top-scorer ranks fourth amongst NEC players in goals per game (0.45) and is tied for sixth with five goals on the year. Additionally, Shauna Edwards is tied for seventh with three assists in 2011. Senior goalie Jill Kelley is ranked eighth in saves (47) and seventh in saves per game (4.27).

What’s Ahead For Quinnipiac
After hosting Long Island, Quinnipiac will play three consecutive games on the road, starting with a NEC match at Monmouth on Friday, Oct. 21 at 4 p.m. The Bobcats will then play at Mount St. Mary’s on Sunday, Oct. 23 at 12 p.m. and Central Connecticut State on Friday, Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. under the lights. Quinnipiac will host Bryant on Sunday, Oct. 30 at Noon for its final regular season game of the year.
