Bobcats Look For First Win Of
The Season
The Quinnipiac women’s soccer team will travel to
take on the University of Hartford in a non-conference game on
Thursday, Sept. 8 at 7 p.m. The Bobcats enter the match-up at 0-1-1
on the year, while Hartford remains unbeaten at 3-0-1 overall.

Scouting Hartford
After playing Old Dominion to a 1-1 draw, Hartford has won
three straight games, including a 1-0 win over Holy Cross and 2-0
victory against Fairleigh Dickinson. In their most recent outing,
the Hawks defeated Temple, 5-1, in the team’s first home
contest of 2011. Five different players scored for the Hawks,
including junior Amelia Pereira, who leads the team with eight
points. Junior Caitlin Alves has scored a team-leading three goals,
while classmate Shealagh Begley has tallied two assists on the
year. Hartford goalkeeper Erin Quinlan posts a 3-0-1 record and two
shutouts. The sophomore goalie has only allowed one goal this
season.
All-Time Against The Hawks
Thursday’s contest marks the first meeting between
Quinnipiac and Hartford.
Last Time Out
The Bobcats lost, 1-0, at Siena on Sunday, Sept. 4.
Overall, Quinnipiac tallied 12 shots in the game, while Siena took
16 shots. Senior goalie Jill Kelley recorded her first loss of
2011, despite posting seven saves, compared to the Saints’
goaltender’s five stops.
Season Opener
Quinnipiac tied Canisius, 2-2, after 110 minutes of play,
in its season opener on Friday, Sept. 2. Senior Furtuna Velaj led
the Bobcats as she scored each of their two goals. Junior Shauna
Edwards helped create both opportunities and was awarded an assist
on Velaj’s first goal of the game. In addition, Jill Kelley
kept the Bobcats alive with six stops in net.
Favorite Freshmen
Jess Lavoie was the only freshman to start in both of the
Bobcats’ games over the weekend. The rookie midfielder also
played a combined 185 minutes, the most of any freshman, in her
first two appearances with Quinnipiac.
Kelley’s a Keeper
Senior goalie Jill Kelley played every minute of
Quinnipiac’s first two games of the year. Kelley made a total
of 13 saves in 200 minutes of play.
Posting Points
Shauna Edwards picked up her 10th career point
in Friday’s game at Canisius. The junior tallied her first
assist of the year, and fourth of her career, in the 2-2 draw.
NEC Preseason Coaches’
Poll
The Quinnipiac University women’s soccer team was
picked to finish fifth out of 11 teams, in the 2011 Northeast
Conference Preseason Coaches’ Poll. The Bobcats finished last
season 7-7-4 overall and at 5-2-3 in conference play, which secured
a spot for the Quinnipiac in the 2010 NEC Tournament.

All-Conference Action
The Bobcats return junior forward Furtuna Velaj, who was
named All-Northeast Conference first team last year. Velaj led
Quinnipiac in points (19), goals (7) and assists (5) as a
sophomore.
Likely Leaders
Quinnipiac graduate student Kyla Miles looks to lead
Quinnipiac from the back line after starting in every game last
season for the Bobcats. Miles tallied two assists in 2010 and was
named All-Tournament during the NEC postseason. Sophomore defender
Beck Kiting will work alongside Miles, after receiving the
team’s Young Player of the Year award as a freshman.
Senior goalkeeper Jill Kelley also made an impact last year,
posting 84 saves, 1.16 goals-against average and a 6-6-4
record.
Good Fortune
Senior Furtuna Velaj was recently named a top potential
draft pick by www.AllWhiteKit.com. The
women’s soccer site also name Velaj as one of the top
collegiate forwards in the country.
What’s Ahead for the Bobcats
The Bobcats continue play on the road as they travel to
another intrastate opponent, Yale, on Tuesday, Sept. 13 under the
lights at 7 p.m. Quinnipiac then hosts Lehigh on Sept. 16 and Holy
Cross on Sept. 18, prior to playing its first Northeast Conference
games of the year at Sacred Heart on Sept. 23 and Fairleigh
Dickinson on Sept. 30.
Quinnipiac kicks off October with four-straight contests at the Quinnipiac Soccer Field, including games against Robert Morris on Oct. 8, Saint Francis (Pa.) on Oct. 9, Long Island on Oct. 14, and Wagner on Oct. 16. The team will then make trips to Monmouth on Oct. 21, Mount St. Mary’s on Oct. 23 and Central Connecticut State on Oct. 28, before hosing Bryant on Oct. 30 for the final game of the regular season.
