Velaj Scores Game-Winning Goal To Lead Women's Soccer To 1-0 Win Against Sacred Heart
HAMDEN,
Mass. - Junior Furtuna
Velaj (Stamford, Conn.) scored the game-winning goal as the
Quinnipiac women's soccer team beat Sacred Heart, 1-0, in a
Northeast Conference match at the Quinnipiac Soccer Field on Friday
afternoon. With the win, the Bobcats improve to 6-7-3 overall and
4-2-3 in conference play, while the Pioneers fall to 8-6-4 on the
season and 4-3-3 in the NEC.
Velaj
scored the game's only goal in the 83rd minute of play.
Sophomore midfielder Jillian
Strassner (Avon, Conn.) dribbled down the right side of the
field and crossed the ball into the box to find Velaj, who headed
the ball into the lower-left corner of the net, for her sixth goal
of the season.
"By the end of the game we kept our composure and didn't let the
emotion of the game take over," said Head Coach Dave
Clarke. "We did leave it late, but there was always that chance
that just one moment of magic from anyone of our talented players
would change the outcome and I think it was a reward for the better
team."
Overall, the Bobcats
outshot the Pioneers 13-6 in the win and were awarded six corner
kicks throughout the game.
Quinnipiac goalkeeper
Jillian
Kelley (Simsbury, Conn.) recorded two saves and compiled her
fifth shutout of the season, while Sacred Heart goalie Meghan
Reichelt made nine saves on the game.
The Bobcats host NEC opponent Fairleigh Dickinson University on
Sunday, Oct. 31 at 1 p.m. for their last game of the 2010 regular
season. The Quinnipiac University Athletic Department will honor
the team's nine seniors before the start of Sunday's game at the
Quinnipiac Soccer Field.
With a win against FDU, the Bobcats can clinch a spot in the
Northeast Conference Tournament.
