BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The
Quinnipiac University women's soccer team continued its unbeaten
streak to five games with a 0-0 tie in a Northeast Conference
contest against Long Island University at the LIU Field earlier
today. With the draw, Quinnipiac advances to 1-0-2 in the NEC and
3-4-2 overall, while Long Island becomes 2-0-1 in the NEC and holds
an overall record of 8-1-2.
"Today went very well
in terms of the results and very well in terms of the performance,"
said Head Coach Dave
Clarke. "To pick up a point and continue the unbeaten streak
was very important and could be very critical at a point down the
road."
As play began in the first half, both teams tested the goalkeepers
early, yet neither could capitalize. In the first minute of play,
sophomore Shauna
Edwards (Southington, Conn.) had a chance to put the Bobcats on
the scoreboard, but her shot was blocked. Long Island forward
Kayleigh Morgan blasted a shot in the 26th minute of
play, hitting the post. Quinnipiac tallied three shots, while Long
Island took five shots in the first half.
The Bobcats found themselves entering the second half at a tie, as
they did in their most recent outing at Wagner College on Friday,
Oct. 1. Quinnipiac had a chance to win the game right before the
end of regulation, but the shot by junior Kristina
Del Mistro (East Williston, N.Y.) went high from six yards out.
With neither team finding the net in the second half, the Bobcats
rallied for their second double-overtime game of the season.
Neither Quinnipiac
nor Long Island could score in the next 20 minutes of overtime play
and the game resulted in a 0-0 draw. The Bobcats tallied nine shots
on the game, while the Blackbirds took 15 shots overall.
Overall, junior goalkeeper Jillian
Kelley (Simsbury, Conn.) made five saves for the Bobcats, while
LIU goalie Jessica Sexton made two saves total. With the tie,
Kelley earns her second shutout of the season.
Quinnipiac picked up two points on the weekend, including a point
from Friday's match at Wagner College, where the Bobcats tied the
Seahawks 1-1.
The Bobcats play two
conference games at the Quinnipiac Soccer Field in Hamden, Conn.
next weekend. Quinnipiac hosts Monmouth on Friday, Oct. 8 at 3:30
p.m. and Mount Saint Mary's on Sunday, Oct. 10 at noon.
