Women's Soccer Draws, 1-1, With Wagner

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - The Quinnipiac University women's soccer team tied, 1-1, in a match against Northeast Conference opponent Wagner College at the Wagner Stadium. With the draw, Quinnipiac becomes 1-0-1 in the NEC and 3-4-1 overall, while Wagner is 0-1-1 in the NEC and holds an overall record of 4-7-1. Freshman defender Beck Kiting (Canberra, Australia) scored the Bobcats' lone goal, which was also her second of the season.

"We definitely had clear cut chances to win the game, but then you know when you're on the turf and the weather's bad, and it's windy and it's wet, you just don't want to lose it," said Head Coach Dave Clarke. "In the end, it's disappointing we didn't win, but certainly happy to take a point out of the game. Every point counts."

Quinnipiac scored the first goal of the game in the 12th minute of play. Junior forward Furtuna Velaj (Stamford, Conn.) took a shot hitting the post, which was recovered by Kiting, who controlled the rebound and put the ball in the back of the net.

In the 29th minute, Monica Zurich scored the tying goal for Wagner. Zurich received a throw-in from Katie Keown, chested the ball down and took one-touch to volley the ball into the left side of the goal. The goal was her first of the season.

As the first half came to a close, the Bobcats found themselves leading the game in shots (12), while the Seahawks had tallied four.

Both Quinnipiac and Wagner could not capitalize in the second half and the two teams remained tied at 1-1, as the game was forced into overtime, the first for Quinnipiac this season.

The Bobcats were able to get four shots off in the next twenty minutes, including one blasted by Velaj, which ended up hitting the crossbar. However, the game ultimately finished in a draw.

Quinnipiac goalie Jillian Kelley (Simsbury, Conn.) had three saves in the game, while Wagner goalkeeper Katie Marcy made a total of nine saves. The Bobcats outshot the Seahawks19-8 overall.

The Bobcats travel to Brooklyn, N.Y. on Sunday, Oct. 3 for a conference match against the Blackbirds of Long Island University. The game is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
