Women's Soccer Blanks Long Island, 3-0

HAMDEN, Conn. - Sophomore forward Furtuna Velaj (Stamford, Conn.) scored a goal and added two assists as the Quinnipiac University women's soccer team blanked Long Island University, 3-0, Friday afternoon. Freshman goalkeeper Biz Cook (Appleton, Wis.) earned her third shutout of the season as the Bobcats improve to 4-5-2 overall this season with a 3-1-1 record in the Northeast Conference. The Blackbirds' record drops to 6-7 overall, with a 2-4 stand in the NEC.

Quinnipiac opened up the scoring early in the third minute of play. Velaj drilled a shot from the far left corner of the 18-yard box that the Long Island goalkeeper batted back into play. Jillian Strassner (Avon, Conn.) collected the rebound and tapped it into the left corner for her third goal of season.

The Bobcats struck again in the tenth minute of play on a free kick opportunity that Velaj set up 25-yards from the net. The forward's boot struck off the crossbar to the left side where Kristina Del Mistro (East Williston, N.Y.) connected with a header into the upper left corner. The goal was Del Mistro's third of the season, and the assist was Velaj's fifth.

Velaj boosted the Quinnipiac lead to three in the 69th minute of play. After carrying the ball down the right side of the field, Velaj took a hard shot across the goalmouth that ricocheted off a Long Island defender into the net for the score. The tally was Velaj's team-leading seventh of the season.

Cook earned her third shutout in net for the Bobcats, recording five saves in the win, while Blackbirds' goalkeeper Jennifer Bannon made ten saves in the loss.

The Bobcats return to action Sunday afternoon when they host Wagner at the Quinnipiac Soccer Field. Along with the field hockey team, the women's soccer squad will be holding a joint benefit for the Susan G. Komen "Play For The Cure" on Sunday, Oct. 18. The players will be honoring the organization by wearing pink tee shirts during their pregame warm up. The game is scheduled to start at 12 p.m.
