HAMDEN, Conn. - Quinnipiac University women's soccer sophomore Furtuna Velaj (Stamford, Conn.) was named the adidas/Northeast Conference Player of the Week after her performance at Siena and Rhode Island this past weekend. The forward put up seven points in the two games, recording two goals and one assist.
Against Siena on Sept. 18, Velaj netted her second goal of the season as she tied the game in the second half, 1-1. She picked up a rebound inside the scorer's box and snapped a low shot into the right corner of the net. Minutes later, she assisted fellow sophomore Kristina Del Mistro (East Williston, N.Y.) to put the Bobcats up 2-1. Her free kick from outside the 18-yard box was tipped by Del Mistro for the score and Velaj's third assist of the season.
The Bobcats traveled to the University of Rhode Island on Sept. 20, where Velaj scored both of Quinnipiac's goals in the 2-2 tie. Her first came in the 50th minute of play to even the game at 1-1. Velaj collected her own rebound off the Rams' goalkeeper and flicked it into the right side of the net for her third goal of the year. She struck again in the 78th minute on a breakaway from center field, stopping ten yards out to lob a high shot over the keeper.
Velaj ranks first in the NEC in points (11), goals (4), and ranks third in assists (3). She also ranks first in shots per game with 6.4. The forward has led all players in shots in four of the five games the Bobcats have played this season.
Quinnipiac returns to action tomorrow afternoon when they travel to Yale for a non-conference match-up. The game is scheduled to start at 5 p.m.
