STANFORD, Calif- The No. 3 ranked Quinnipiac University women's rugby team fell to No. 2 Winona State, 60-22, in the semifinal round of the 2013 Emirates Airline Collegiate National Tournament on Friday afternoon. Quinnipiac suffered its first loss of the season, falling to 14-1 overall. The Bobcats have outscored its opponents, 718-145, this year.
Semifinal action got underway at Steuber Rugby Stadium as the Winona State Warriors quickly jumped out to an early, 7-0, lead with 27:40 left to play in the first half. The Bobcats would respond to the deficit as freshman wing Natalie Kosko (Sebastian, Fla.) scored on their first offensive set to put the Q on the board, 7-5. Senior Krystin Orrico (Cranford, N.J.) would convert on the conversion attempt to even the scoreboard, 7-7. Kosko wasn't through yet though as the next time down the field she would plow through the strong Winona State back line to give Quinnipiac their first lead of the day with 20 minutes remaining in regulation. However, Winona would quickly tie up the score, 12-12, soon after.
Resilient as always, the Bobcats responded before half's end. Senior flank Marie Pescatore (North Reading, Mass.) put the Bobcats up off a pass from Winters, Calif. native, Elena Orlando, to give the visiting Bobcats the 17-12 lead. With a little over five minutes remaining in the first half, the Warriors managed to regain the lead, 19-17. Before the final whistle of the first half, the Bobcats would stop the Warriors on the goal line and carried momentum into the latter stanza.
After intermission, the Warriors strong back presence countered Quinnipiac's front line. The Warriors would go back–to–back as they carried the ball down the field and increased their lead 36-17, to give the Bobcats their largest deficit all season long.
The freshman wing, Kosko, would rally past the Warriors as she successfully broke nine tackles along the way to knock on Winona's doorstep. Kosko would add her 27th try of her career as she led all Bobcats on the afternoon with 15 points, cutting Quinnipiac's deficit, 36-22. The 2012 Emirate Airline's Runner's Up would regain possession from the Bobcats to carry it down to Quinnipiac's zone four more times in the second for the final score to read, 60-22, in the Warrior's favor.
The Bobcats will return to the pitch for a final match tomorrow in the 2013 Emirates Airline Colligate National Tournament consolation game against the University of Buffalo Buffalos, Saturday, May 4. Action will begin at 12 p.m. EST on the Steuber Rugby Stadium on the Stanford University campus.
