Women’s Rugby Downs Appalachian State, 22-10; Bobcats Advance to National Semifinals
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Quinnipiac University women's rugby team defeated Appalachian State University on Saturday afternoon, 22-10, at the Brigade Sports Complex on U.S. Naval Academy Campus. With the win, Quinnipiac improves to 14-0 on the season and has advanced to the National Semifinals which is to be hosted on Friday, May 3rd at Steuber Rugby Stadium (Stanford University) in Stanford, CA.
A true all-around team effort helped the Bobcats over Appalachian State. Junior Elena Orlando (Winters, Calif.), sophomores Elisa Cuellar (Palm Bay, Fla.), Raechel Stimson (Cameron Park, Calif.) and freshman Natalie Kosko (Sebastain, Fla.) each crossed the goal line once on the day. Senior Krystin Orrico also posted points with a successful conversion, with Kosko and Cuellar combining for three assists in the triumph.
Quinnipiac opened the scoring summary in the first five minutes when Kosko found room to work with and made her way to the end zone for the game's first try. Orrico tacked on a successful conversion for an early 7-0 advantage. The remainder of the half belonged to Appalachian State however, as the Mountaineers bounced back with a try to put them on the board 7-5. Appalachian State wasn't through either, capatalizing on a penalty try before half's end to give them a 10-7 lead at the break.
After the intermission, time of possession was key for the Bobcats as Quinnipiac turned tremendous defense into offense. QU held Appalachian State scoreless in the second half, allowing the Bobcats to regain the lead with their offensive prowess. Stimpson scored midway through the stanza which granted Quinnipiac a 12-10 advantage; and Cuellar tallied her 11th try of the season off a pass from Kosko for a 17-10 lead. Orlando sealed the deal when she escaped for a 40-yard run off a two-three load pass from Kosko, punching Quinnipiac's ticket to California.
The Bobcats defensive effort was terrific as the Mountaineers offense couldn't get anything going in the second half. Head coach Becky Carlson credits her team's collective effort to rise to the occasion and persevere past a talent Appalachian State squad.
For the season the Bobcats have outscored their opponents, 694-72. With the loss, Appalachian State fell to 5-1 during their spring season.
Quinnipiac will continue on in the 2013 Emirates Airline USA Rugby Women's Collegiate playoffs. The Bobcats head to the National Semifinals and Championship which is hosted on Friday, May 3 and Saturday, May 4 (respectively) at Steuber Rugby Stadium (Stanford University) in Stanford, CA.
