Women’s Rugby Wins Tri-State Conference Championship With 22-14 Win Against Albany
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Quinnipiac University women's rugby team won the 2012 Tri-State Conference Championship with a 22-14 win against Albany. The Bobcats complete the season with a perfect 11-0 record after its landmark win at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. Albany drops to 7-2-1 for the 2012-13 season.
For the year, Quinnipiac outscored their opponents 605-42, in head coach Becky Carlson's second season. Quinnipiac earns a spot in the national tournament in the spring with their first league championship.
"Today was a great day. We came out on top with not only a win but a well fought win. Albany did not go quietly and even after a first slow ten minutes, we were able to pick up the tempo and maintain it," said Carlson. " We are miles away from where we were last year and it feels good to go into nationals undefeated."
The Bobcats' defense was able to control their backline from the start while finding their footing as Quinnipiac began to capitalize on the opportunity ahead. Sophomore Elisa Cuellar (Palm Bay, Fla.) dished the ball to freshman force Natalie Kosko (Sebastian, Fla.), the team's leading scorer, to give the Bobcats a 5-0 lead in the 21st minute of play.
Seniors Jacqueline Maclearie (Tinton Falls, N.J.) and Nancy Dunn (Moscow, Pa.) continued to plug away offensively, plowing through the Danes' defensive unit for back-to-back tries to provide the Bobcats a 15-0 lead going into halftime. Cuellar handed out another assist to bring her to 8 assists on the year.
The second half opened up with the Great Danes packing punch to catch the Bobcats on their heels before marching down the field to allow Albany to mark their first tallies on their side of the board, 15-7.
The Bobcats offense answered back and Dunn was able to cap off the season to put the Bobcats ahead 20-7. Senior fullback Krystin Orrico (Cranford, N.J.) set the Bobcats final score at 22-7 after conversion points. The final minutes of the game.
Stellar defense from seniors Katie Wood (Hamilton, N.J.), Marie Pescatore (North Reading, Mass.) and sophomore Raechel Stimpson (Cameron Park, Calif.) provided the need effort in defending the Bobcats zone. Wood collected 6 tackles to bring her team-lead to 55 to finish her senior campaign.
Albany finished the game scoring their last try after regulation to mark the final 22-14 in favor of Quinnipiac.
