CHARLESTON, Ill. – Despite holding the Eastern Illinois squad scoreless through the first thirty minutes of play, the Quinnipiac women’s rugby team was unable to contain the Panthers for the entire match and fell, 24-0, in the first-ever meeting between two Division I women’s rugby programs on Sunday afternoon at Lakeside Field. The Bobcats fall to 0-2 on the season, while the Panthers improve to 3-0 on the season.

“We came out with a lot of energy,” said head coach Becky Carlson. “I thought we did an exceptional job plugging the holes and we refused to let them through. Our scrums were solid and we put a lot of pressure on Eastern Illinois all afternoon. We thrived on knowing that we were the underdog and the team is already looking forward to the next time we have a chance to play them at home.”

In front of 643 fans, the Bobcats played with a spirited effort and held the perennial powerhouse Panthers to just two tries late in the first-half to bring the score to 14-0 heading into halftime. Cara Hahne and Narissa Ramirez each scored on a try for the Panthers.

Quinnipiac played another impressive second half, allowing another try by Hahne, before Lauren Doyle scored on her first try of the contest with 30 seconds remaining in the game.

“Junior fullback Krystin Orrico (Cranford, N.J.) played phenomenal today,” said Carlson. “On many occasions she helped us gain yardage and put us deep in their defensive territory.”

The Bobcats and Panthers each won 15 line-outs, while the Panthers held a slight edge in scrums, 14-12. Quinnipiac committed 22 penalties on the afternoon compared to Eastern Illinois 28.

The Bobcats return to action when they travel to face SUNY New Paltz on Sunday, Sept. 25 at 12 p.m.
