About New Paltz
The Hawks are coming off a 3-3 tie against Stony Brook on Sunday, Sept. 18. In their first game of the season, they defeated Hofstra, 44-0 on Sunday, Sept. 11. New Paltz is currently second in league standings. Last season, New Paltz finished with a 3-2 overall record which had them ranked third in league standings.
Last Time Out
Quinnipiac stood up to the challenge and played a gritty game against Eastern Illinois on Sunday, Sept. 18, falling 24-0 in the first-ever meeting between two Division I women’s rugby programs. While the Bobcats failed to score against the top rugby squad in the nation (the Panthers hold an impressive 87-7 all-time record), the teams played a scoreless opening 30 minutes. Time after time Quinnipiac held its line, thwarting a handful of try attempts by Eastern Illinois.
The Bobcats held the Panthers to just four scores in the contest, including a late score with 30 seconds remaining in the game. Junior fullback Krystin Orrico (Cranford, N.J.) led the offensive push for Quinnipiac, driving into the Panthers defensive zone throughout the contest.
History In The Books
Sunday’s contest against Eastern Illinois marked the first time two Division I Women’s Rugby team squared off on the pitch. Eastern Illinois became a Division I program in 2002, as Quinnipiac became the second member this season.
Quinnipiac had a successful inaugural spring season in 2011, hosting its first-ever women’s rugby contest on Saturday, April 2 against Central Connecticut. Despite not competing in the 2010 season, Quinnipiac placed four players on the MetNY U-23 All-Star Team, including junior Katie Wood (Hamilton, N.J.), sophomore Megan Hannemann (Manchester, N.H.), freshman Jacqueline MacLearie (Tinton Falls, N.J.), and freshman Diana Poulsen (Dover, N.J).
The Bobcats are the most recent members to join the Metropolitan New York Rugby Football Union, which is the governing body for over 80 men’s and women’s youth, high school and college clubs in the Metropolitan New York City region. Quinnipiac will play in the MetNY College Women’s Division II Conference, which is the home to Marist, Vassar, Rutgers, SUNY New Paltz, SUNY Stony Brook, and Hofstra.
Following Sunday’s contest against New Paltz, Quinnipiac will host its first home game of the season on Sunday, Oct. 2 against Marist at 12 p.m. The Bobcats will then host Vassar on Saturday, Oct. 8 and Eastern Illinois on Sunday, Oct. 16, with both games scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
