HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac University women's lacrosse team was honored for a ninth consecutive year by the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches' Association (IWLCA) and recognized with 2014 Academic Squad honors. Quinnipiac was one of 84 schools honored nationwide after posting a grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher.
"My staff is extremely proud of the 2014 team's academic performance," 10th year head coach Danie Caro said. "The team's GPA was the highest it's been during my tenure at Quinnipiac, and that did not happen by accident. Both of my assistants, Brittany and Katy, took an increased role in the academic mentoring of our younger players this spring, and it clearly paid off."
The IWLCA also recognized student-athletes who excelled in the classroom on the 2014 Individual Honor Roll. Graduating seniors Phoebe Laplante (New Bedford, Mass.) and Kayla Fu (Severna Park, Md.), and junior Kyra Ochwat (Farmingdale, N.Y.) were all named to the list for their high academic scores. To be eligible, student-athletes must have reached a junior status at their respective institution and achieve a grade point average (GPA) of 3.5 or higher. The IWLCA honored 739 student-athletes from 162 different institutions.
"Kayla, Phoebe, and Kyra are great students and outstanding academic role models for their younger peers," noted Caro. "I am pleased to see them earn individual recognition for their efforts."
In the 2013 season, the women's lacrosse team had four players qualify for the IWLCA Academic Honor Roll team, and has placed numerous student-athletes on the honor roll in each of the last nine years.
