EMMITSBURG, Md.- Kyra Ochwat (Farmingdale, N.Y.) matched a game-high with five points on Sunday afternoon, but the Quinnipiac University women's lacrosse team suffered a heartbreaking defeat, 10-9, to Mount St. Mary's at Waldron Family Stadium. With the loss, Quinnipiac falls below .500 in conference play to 3-4 and will need two wins and some help around the league for a chance in the NEC Tournament.
Ochwat served as Quinnipiac's offensive catalyst for the afternoon, scoring four goals and assisting on another for the Bobcats. Ochwat extended her point-streak to 23 straight games dating back to last season, including six straight games with at least three points. Chelsea Guerrera (Wantagh, N.Y.) posted a season-high of three points on a goal and two assists, while Sarah Allen (Glastonbury, Conn.) added a goal and an assist. Kayla Fu (Severna Park, Md.), Michaela Tinsley (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and Lianne Toomey (Hicksville, N.Y.) each found the back of the net once.
Mount St. Mary's never trailed in the game, but Quinnipiac mounted a furious second-half comeback to make it close. The Mountaineers held the Bobcats to just two goals in the first half, both off the stick of Ochwat, and carried a 4-2 lead into the break at halftime.
The Mount garnered its largest lead of the game, 5-2, after a quick goal to start the second half, but Quinnipiac came to life with four of the game's next five goals – including a run of three straight. Guerrera, Toomey, Allen and Tinsley all scored which brought the game to a 6-6 deadlock with 17 minutes remaining.
The hosting Mountaineers created another deficit for Quinnipiac to overcome, taking a 9-7 lead with under five minutes to play. No stranger to late-game heroics, Ochwat found the back of the net twice which included the equalizer with just 59 seconds to play. Unfortunately, Kaitlyn Larrimore's unassisted tally with 25 seconds left proved to be the difference, sending the Mountaineers to a 10-9 victory from Waldron Family Stadium.
Samantha Tilts (Post Washington, N.Y.) saved eight of the 16 shots she faced in net for the Bobcats. Her counterpart, Sarah Jane Leder turned aside seven shots in the winning effort. Mount St. Mary's controlled the time of possession and took seven more shots (27-20) in the game. The Mountaineers also forced four failed clear attempts and 11 Bobcat turnovers.
Quinnipiac controlled the circle, edging MSM in draw controls, 11-8. Phoebe Laplante (New Bedford, Mass.) and Toomey each collected three apiece.
Quinnipiac is back in action on Friday, April 19 against Robert Morris University. Game time is set for 3 p.m. at the QU Lacrosse Turf Field.
