Playing for a Cause
The Bobcats welcome the Wagner Seahawks (5-7, 1-3 NEC) to Mount Carmel Campus for an NEC clash at 1 p.m. The women's lacrosse team has designated this weekend as their 'Stick It To Cancer Weekend', where donations will be accepted to help raise awareness and the fight against cancer.
Stick It To Cancer Weekend
The team is participating in the Coaches vs. Cancer program to raise awareness and funding for the American Cancer Society through Quinnipiac's Positive Play program. The Bobcats have been collecting donations during playoff games at the TD Bank Center and donors have completed donor cards that will be used to form a "Wall of Hope" that will be displayed at the Bobcats' games against Long Island (April 5) and Wagner (April 7). Donations are also being collected online and at the entrance to the field on game days. Each player will be playing for a loved one affected by cancer during the 'Stick It To Cancer' weekend.
Scouting the Seahawks
The Seahawks are Connecticut bound this weekend, heading to Sacred Heart on Friday, April 5 before taking on the Bobcats on Sunday. Wagner is 5-7 on the season, while boasting a 1-3 mark in NEC play. Most recently, the Seahawks took down Saint Francis University for their first NEC win, but then suffered a 12-7 defeat to Robert Morris. Against the Pioneers, Shea Gegan led the Seahawks with three points on two goals and an assist while forcing a game-high five caused turnovers. Annie O'Connor also had two goals for the Seahawks while Jessica Mills, Gretchen Fay and Erika Bulken each chipped in with a goal apiece. Freshman Katie Ferraro turned away six shots in goal. Mills leads the Seahawks 19 goals and 27 assists for 46 total points on the season. O'Connor has 21 goals and 10 assists.
All-Time Against The Seahawks
Sunday's game will be the 13th time the two sides face each other, as the Bobcats own a commanding 10-2 all-time series lead. Quinnipiac has won 10 straight games against Wagner, including a 19-8 victory in their last meeting on March 23, 2012. The Bobcats received goals from a slew of players, as Kyra Ochwat netted three goals and both Marissa Caroleo and Chelsea Guerrera added two goals apiece. Allen, Lianne Toomey and freshman Vicki Kuhn all scored one goal in the contest for Quinnipiac as well.
Last Time Out
Kyra Ochwat carried the Bobcats offense, matching a career high of six points off three goals and three assists, but it wasn't enough as the Quinnipiac women's lacrosse team fell to the Central Connecticut Blue Devils, 10-9, last Saturday from Arute Field. Michaela Tinsley picked up her sixth hat trick of the year as she added three goals to the scoring column against the Blue Devils. Lianne Toomey collected two goals while fellow classmate Sarah Allen picked up one goal and two assists for her fourth straight game with at least three points. Freshman Maria Blois added two assists. Goalkeeper Samantha Tilts made 13 saves in net for the Bobcats.
Among the Best
Ochwat torched the Blue Devil defense with a career high six points on three goals and three assists (3/30). The scoring outburst from Ochwat now gives her 29 points (22 goals, seven assists) this season and maintains her position as the second-highest goal scorer in the NEC at 2.75 goals per game.
Tinsley Steps Up
Michaela Tinsley has been sensation for the Bobcats this year, recording hat tricks in six games - including three out of her last four. Tinsley stands right behind Ochwat with 21 goals and one assist for 22 total points. She is sixth in the NEC in scoring, averaging 2.1 goals per game.
Lending a Helping Hand
Sarah Allen has 22 assists and 10 goals for a total of 32 points on the season. Her 22 assists are good enough for second place in the NEC, tallying just over two assists per game.
Toomey Hits 100
Senior Lianne Toomey hit her 100th career point in the game against Iona on March 6, 2013. The point was made in the deciding seconds of overtime against the Gaels as Toomey found the back of the net for the second time on the day. Toomey has 14 goals this season and 86 for her career.
Goals by Guerrera
Senior midfielder Chelsea Guerrera has five goals and one assist for six points this year. The veteran has had 34 goals for the Bobcats in her tenure at Quinnipiac and has accumulated 50 career points. Guerrera also leads the team with 29 draw controls this season.
Focus on Fu
Junior Kayla Fu recorded her first career goal in the match against UConn on Saturday, March 2. The attacker has seen increased playing time this season and has three points for the Bobcats.
Freshman Maria Blois recorded her first collegiate career goal in the game against UConn on Saturday, March 2. Blois, with just under eight minutes to play in the first half, ripped a shot into the net to pull closer to the Huskies. The rookie has seen action in every game thus far, compiling eight goals and eight assists for 16 points.
