NEW BRITAIN, Conn. –Sophomore Kyra Ochwat (Farmingdale, N.Y.) carried the Bobcats offense, matching her career high with six points off three goals and three assists but it wasn't enough as the Quinnipiac women's lacrosse team fell to the Central Connecticut Blue Devils, 10-9, on Saturday from Arute Field. With the loss Quinnipiac drops to 3-7 overall and 1-2 against NEC opponents. The intrastate rival picked up their fifth straight victory and remain undefeated in conference play as they stand at 6-5 overall and 4-0 in the NEC.
Ochwat was unstoppable for the Bobcats as the team's leading goal scorer matched her career high of six points. The scoring outburst now gives her 29 points (22 goals, seven assists) this season and maintains her position as the second-highest goal scorer in the NEC at 2.75 goals per game. Junior Michaela Tinsley (Shrewsbury, Mass.) picked up her sixth hat trick of the year as she added three goals to the scoring column against the Blue Devils. Senior Lianne Toomey (Hicksville, N.Y.) collected two goals while fellow classmate Sarah Allen (Glastonbury, Conn.) picked up one goal and two assists for her fourth straight game with at least three points. Freshman Maria Blois (Cheshire, Conn.) added two assists.
Quinnipiac, who never trailed in the first half, jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead as Toomey collected her 13th goal of the season off a feed from Ochwat. The teams would go on to exchange goals back-and-forth before the Bobcats were able to muster a commanding lead. Sophomore Ochwat buried the ball past the Blue Devils' goalkeeper, Morgan Tullar on a free position for her 21st goal of the season to make it 6-3 with 13:09 remaining in the first stanza. Ochwat finished the first half with another goal with just over a minute showing on the clock to give Quinnipiac their largest lead of the match, 8-4.
As they've done all season, the Blue Devils weren't through as they opened the second half with back-to-back goals to cut the deficit to 8-6. Through 10 games this season, Central has been outscored 48-38 in the first half but completely dominate the second half of games with a 61-44 advantage. Saturday was no different as Central was able to cut it to one goal game with 14:32 remaining. With the Bobcats holding onto a 8-7 lead, CCSU freshman Andrea Tarsi tied it up at eight a piece before Quinnipiac junior Michaela Tinsley would answer the Blue Devils, 4-0, run to push the Bobcats back on top, 9-8, with 11:49 remaining in the second stanza. It was the only life in the second half that the Bobcats would see as Central would rally two more goals to close out the half and gain the lead as the final minutes ticked down.
The Bobcats could only muster one goal in the second half as CCSU now has outscored their opponents 67-45 in the second half of games this season and extend their lead in the NEC conference standings as they're the only team with a 4-0 mark in conference play.
Junior Amanda Toke led Central Connecticut with three goals and three caused turnovers for the Blue Devils. Andrea Tarsi would add two goals for the Blue Devils, while five CCSU players would rattle off a goal to close out the game.
Draw controls heavily favored CCSU down the stretch as they owned an 11-10 lead overall and held the Bobcats to just six shots in the second half. For the game, the Blue Devils outshot QU 30-24, and collected the edge in groundballs, 22-17. With the loss, Quinnipiac drops their perfect 13-0 run against Central Connecticut, as the Blue Devils scored their first victory in 14 all-time meetings.
Sophomore goalkeeper Samantha Tilts (Port Washington, N.Y.) made 13 saves in net for the Bobcats. Tullar turned aside six shots for the Blue Devils.
Quinnipiac will return home to take on the Blackbirds of LIU Brooklyn on the QU Lacrosse Field in Hamden, Conn. Opening draw will take place at 3 p.m. on Friday, April 5. The game will also mark the annual Coaches vs. Cancer: Stick it to Cancer weekend to benefit the American Cancer Society.
