FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Quinnipiac University women's lacrosse team was defeated by future MAAC foe Fairfield, 16-4, on a rainy Tuesday afternoon at Alumni Field in Fairfield. The loss drops Quinnipiac's record to 2-3 on the year, while the Stags improve to 4-3 overall.
"Today was not our best effort," said head coach Danie Caro. "We failed to execute our game plan, and that showed in the results. But I have every confidence that we'll learn something from this, and continue to move forward as a team."
Junior Phoebe Laplante (New Bedford, Mass.) led the way for Quinnipiac with two goals and an assist for three points on the day. Senior Lianne Toomey (Hicksville, N.Y.) and freshman Dominique Compito (Jericho, N.Y.) each chipped in with a goal apiece, which included Compito's first career tally in Bobcat uniform. Senior Sarah Allen (Glastonbury, Conn.) had one assist in the losing effort.
Chelsea Guerrera (Wantagh, N.Y.) and Toomey led the team with two draw controls apiece, while seven Bobcats forced at least one turnover. Overall, the Stags collected a 19-to-10 advantage in groundballs, as well as a 14-to-7 advantage in draw controls. The major discrepancy came on time of possession, evidenced by a 34-14 advantage in shots.
Fairfield jumped out to a 1-0 lead within the first 14 seconds of play starting the game, but Toomey brought the Bobcats even on her fifth goal of the season just five minutes later off a feed from Allen. The Stags would quickly respond with five consecutive goals to stretch the lead to 6-1 before the end of the half.
Fairfield kept it going after the break, adding four goals to its lead. Quinnipiac fought vigorously to get back into the game though; and did manage to cut into the deficit with three straight goals. Laplante scored twice within a three minute span and Compito got the Bobcats to within seven at the 11:19 mark. However, the Stags were too tough on the offensive end, as Fairfield concluded the scoring summary with five more goals before the final whistle.
Sophomore goalie Samantha Tilts (Port Washington, N.Y.) started in goal for Quinnipiac and made eight saves, six coming in first half, and allowing 12 goals on the afternoon. Fairfield's senior starting goalie Katie Keenan made six saves before being replaced by Chelsey Sidaras, who turned away two shots in just over 15 minutes of action.
The Stags had four players who collected two or more goals, including six from Chole Mangan and three from freshman Maeve Quinn. Sophomore Courtney Chmil and junior Melanie Raso each netted two goals. Amanda Best, Jenna Fuchs, and Jamie Leone each tallied one goal in the victory.
Quinnipiac looks to rebound when they take on Brown on Friday, March 15 at 3 p.m. in Providence, R.I.
