HAMDEN, Conn. – Quinnipiac women's lacrosse head coach Danie Caro and the Bobcats are geared up and ready for the 2013 schedule. This spring's 16-game slate features matchups against six different conferences - including the likes of the BIG EAST, MAAC, America East, Ivy League and Colonial. The Bobcats are scheduled to host eight of those at the QU Lacrosse Turf Field on Mount Carmel Campus.
"We are very excited about our 2013 schedule," said Caro. "The early non-conference slate is one of the most ambitious we've undertaken and should really help prepare us for NEC play. We expect to take some lumps early on, but we know we have to challenge ourselves in order to grow as a team."
Quinnipiac opens the 2013 season with back-to-back home games; beginning with cross-town rival Yale on Wednesday, Feb. 27th (4 PM). The Bobcats and the Bulldogs will meet for the first time in history, despite being just 10 miles apart. Quinnipiac wraps up the home stand three days later, when the Bobcats welcome BIG EAST foe UConn on Saturday, March 2nd at 12 p.m.
The squad then hits the road for its next five games; as they face Iona on Wednesday, March 6th in New Rochelle, N.Y. (3 PM), Vermont on Saturday, March 9th (1 PM) in Burlington, Vt. and Fairfield on Tuesday, March 12th (3 PM) in Fairfield, Conn. Quinnipiac suffered home losses to UVM and the Stags last season and defeated Iona, 19-8, in their last meeting back in March of 2010.
The Bobcats conclude non-conference competition with Brown University on Friday March 15th (4 PM), before traveling to Hofstra University on Sunday, March 17th (2 PM). Last season, Quinnipiac suffered tough loss to the Bears in a high-scoring affair in Providence. The Bobcats have never faced the Hofstra Pride.
The all-important Northeast Conference schedule is next for Quinnipiac. "The NEC has become increasingly competitive in recent years, and we open conference play with two teams that we lost to last year," said Caro. "Our motivation to succeed in NEC play is extremely high, and we all know how important it is to generate momentum in the early conference contests."
The Bobcats open at home on Friday, March 22nd against Sacred Heart. The Pioneers shared the 2012 regular-season title with the Bobcats and served as the host of the NEC Tournament. SHU outlasted QU, 10-9, in their lone encounter last season.
The Bobcats hit the road for two straight games before returning to the QU Lacrosse Turf Field. Quinnipiac travels to Bryant on March 28th (7 PM) and Central Connecticut on March 30th (1 PM). The Bobcats continue on through April, hosting LIU Brooklyn (April 5th – 3 PM) and Wagner (April 7th – 1 PM), before heading back on the road to Monmouth (April 12th – 3 PM) and Mount St. Mary's (April 14th – 12 PM). Quinnipiac closes out the regular-season with Robert Morris on April 19th (3 PM) and Saint Francis on April 21st (12 PM) – with Senior Day scheduled for the Sunday showdown with the Red Flash.
"There really are no easy games in our conference," Caro remarked. "There are always a number of teams that are competing for those four playoff spots and anyone can beat anyone else if they play better on game day. It seems like every year it comes down to the final weekend of conference play, and I expect this year to be no different."
The NEC Women's Lacrosse Championship takes place April 26 & 28 at the home of the high seed. The top four teams in the regular season standings will advance to the postseason event. The winner of the NEC Tournament will receive the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
