Women's Lacrosse Donates To Helen Street School Recess Program
HAMDEN, Conn. – Members of the Quinnipiac University women's lacrosse team recently enjoyed a trip to the Helen Street School in Hamden, as part of QU's Positive Play Initiative, designed to encourage community service by Quinnipiac's student-athletes, coaches and staff.
"It was great to be able to help the students of Helen Street School," said Head Coach Danie Caro. "Our student-athletes can appreciate how important recess is to breaking up the school day for young children, so for them to have the opportunity to enhance the recess program was perfect."
Working in conjunction with former Bobcat Laura Iannotti '11, the women's lacrosse team gathered up various pieces of athletic equipment from the coaches at Quinnipiac and donated the collection to the school's recess program. According to Kyra Ochwat, one of the team's Positive Play captains, "The entire Quinnipiac Athletics Department really made this event happen. They were all more than willing to help and contribute, which was really exciting for us and the children!"
Upon arrival to the school, players and coaches carried large boxes full of used sports equipment for the students. After handing out the equipment, the team joined the students in numerous outdoor activities such as basketball, kickball, jump-roping and many more.
"I really appreciate all that Quinnipiac Athletics has done for Helen Street School," said Iannotti. "It meant the world to me to see how happy my students were to receive the recess equipment today. I know how important community service is to women's lacrosse team, so when I needed help I knew who to turn to. I can't thank the QU athletes and coaches enough. I feel so proud to be a Quinnipiac Lacrosse Alumnus."
The Bobcats were able to stay for several waves of recess, and were able to see first-hand how much their donation meant to the students and staff at Helen Street. "It was so great to be able to give back to the community," junior Michaela Tinsley said. "Everyone on our team had a blast playing with the students at Helen Street and it was really a great experience."
The women's lacrosse team opens their 2012 fall season on Saturday, October 6 at 1:30 p.m. The Bobcats square off against NEC foes Sacred Heart and Monmouth at the QU Lacrosse Turf Field on Mount Carmel Campus.
