BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The Quinnipiac University women's lacrosse team earned its third Northeast Conference victory of the season, 23-9, Friday afternoon against Long Island at LIU Field. Sophomore Devon Gibney (Hopkinton, Mass.) scored six times, all in the first half, to lift the Bobcats' NEC record to 3-0 this season and 4-4 overall. The Blackbirds' loss drops their record to 0-3 in league play and 0-8 overall.
"Although our game was not as sharp as we would've liked, we came away with a win and that is always a positive," Head Coach Danie Caro said. "We got some contributions from a few different players and it was good to see the younger players continue to develop and add to our team."
Gibney was a perfect 4-for-4 with the free-position attempt in the game. Junior Christine Sinnigen (Sudbury, Mass.) scored three times and added an assist in the game, and was also perfect with the free position, going 1-for-1 with the opportunity.
Freshman Chelsea Guerrera (Wantagh, N.Y.) matched her career high as she scored three goals against LIU. Guerrera also added an assist for four points in the game. Team captain Katie Latonick (Severna Park, Md.) also scored four points in the game, scoring once and adding three assists. Latonick also added three draw controls.
Senior Kaitlyn Vennard (Albany, N.Y.) connected with fellow senior Lyndsey Banach (Syracuse, N.Y.) for the final Quinnipiac goal of the first half. Banach found Vennard cutting to the net for the team's 13th goal of the half. That was answered 15 seconds later by the Blackbirds' Annie Kalata with three seconds remaining, cutting the lead to nine at the half, 13-4.
Ten second-half goals by the Bobcats held off LIU for the win, 23-9. Junior Lexi DeStefano (Brookfield, Conn.) earned the win in goal for Quinnipiac, turning aside eight shots in just of 41 minutes of play. Sophomore Noelle Martello (Westbury, N.Y.) came in for the final 19 minutes to make three saves.
Freshman Sarah Allen (Glastonbury, Conn.) scored twice and added an assist, while junior Laura Iannotti (Rocky Point, N.Y.) and sophomore Jane Moldovan (Shoreham, N.Y.) each came off the bench to score a goal apiece.
The Bobcats return to action on Thursday, April 1, when they host the Monmouth Hawks. Quinnipiac and Monmouth will begin play at 3 p.m. The contest marks the first of two Friends of Jaclyn Foundation games played next week.
