Women's Lacrosse Dominates Iona In 19-9 Win

HAMDEN, Conn. - Sophomore Marissa Caroleo (North Babylon, N.Y.) scored five goals and posted career highs with three assists and eight points as the Quinnipiac University women's lacrosse team defeated Iona Wednesday afternoon, 19-9, at the Quinnipiac Field Hockey & Lacrosse Turf Field. Graduate student and team captain Katie Latonick (Severna Park, Md.) scored three times and matched a season high with four assists as the Bobcats improve to 3-4 overall with their second straight win. Iona drops to 2-6 this season with the loss.

"I'm really proud of my team for coming out with intensity and executing our game plan from the very first whistle," Head Coach Danie Caro said. "It was nice to see some of our key players make plays early and put a comfortable lead on the board for us."

Twenty-six seconds into the game junior Lauren Matuszczak (East Longmeadow, Mass.) got Quinnipiac on the board. She scored another goal 1:59 into the opening period with Caroleo assisting on both. Devon Gibney (Hopkinton, Mass.) scored the second of the game with Latonick picking up the first of her four assists.

The Bobcats led 14-4 at half after building their lead to as much as 11 in the first 30 minutes of play. The 14 goals came from just five different players with all five of Caroleo's coming in the opening period. Matuszczak scored three time in the half, while Gibney added three and Latonick two of her own. Junior Christine Sinnigen (Sudbury, Mass.) scored her lone goal of the period to give Quinnipiac 14 at the half. Latonick assisted on the final three tallies of the half.

Quinnipiac's five goals in the second half gave the team the 19-9 win. Caitlyn Collins led Iona with three goals, while Casey Scully was the only other multiple-goal scorer for the Gaels, netting two in the loss.

Freshmen Sarah Allen (Glastonbury, Conn.) and Mary Kate Manganiello (Media, Pa.) each scored in the second half, as Allen finished with a goal and three assists to match her career high of four points. Senior Lyndsey Banach (Syracuse, N.Y.) scored the team's second free-position goal of the game late in the final frame.

Sophomore Noelle Martello (Westbury, N.Y.) started in goal for Quinnipiac, playing the first half and turning aside three shots to earn the win. Junior Lexi DeStefano (Brookfield, Conn.) played all 30 minutes of the second half. While in net, she stopped six Iona shots to post a new career high. The Gaels' Carlee Street stopped six shots and allowed 19 goals for the loss.

Senior defender Brittany Hauser (East Northport, N.Y.) picked up two ground balls and three draw controls, while causing two turnovers in the game. Junior Kaitlyn Kelly (North Massapequa, N.Y.) collected two ground balls and also had two caused turnovers in the win, while Matuszczak had a career-high seven draw controls.

The Bobcats return to action Friday when they travel to Brooklyn to take on Northeast Conference opponent Long Island. The teams are set to begin play at 4 p.m.
