Quinnipiac University Bobcats (0-2) vs.
Fairfield University Stags (3-1)
Thursday, March 11, 2010 - 3 p.m.
Quinnipiac Field Hockey & Lacrosse Turf Field - Hamden, Conn.
The Quinnipiac University women's lacrosse team seeks its first win of the season Thursday when it plays host to Fairfield in the 2010 home opener. The game was originally scheduled to be played on Feb. 26, but was rescheduled due to inclement weather conditions. Since that day, the Bobcats have gone on to play two road games, dropping both to UConn and Brown.
Fairfield comes to Hamden for the first meeting in the history of the two programs. The Stags were a 2009 NCAA Tournament participant and Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Champions last season and defeated Sacred Heart in the Play-In Game, 16-10. Fairfield would go on to play Final-Four participant Pennsylvania in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, losing 10-8. This season, the Stags have already played one game against a Northeast Conference opponent in Monmouth. The Stags defeated the Hawks, 20-12, on Feb. 21 at home. Erin Rigby scored seven times and Kristen Coleman added four more goals as the Stags handled Monmouth for the first win of the season. The team is now 3-1 after falling, 12-11, in a nail-biter with James Madison on Tuesday afternoon.
Junior defender Kaitlyn Kelly (North Massapequa, N.Y.) scored her fifth-career goal and recorded a career-high seven draw controls against Brown on Sunday. Those seven draw controls are more in one game than any other player on the Bobcats has in two games thus far. Her three ground balls in each game lead the team this season.
Sophomore Marissa Caroleo (North Babylon, N.Y.) scored a Quinnipiac season-high four goals at Brown. Her career high is five goals in a game. Last season's NEC Rookie of the Year and All-NEC Second Team member scored twice in the first nine minutes of the game, before notching back-to-back goals in the second half.
Freshman attack Sarah Allen (Glastonbury, Conn.) recorded the first point of her career 3:50 into her second game. Her assist on Caroleo's first goal was the first point of her career. Allen did not have to wait long to notch her any more points as she recorded two more assists in the first half and one more in the second for four in the game.
Junior Christine Sinnigen (Sudbury, Mass.) scored three times in Providence on Sunday. Against Brown, the third-year Bobcat scored two times in the final ten minutes of the first half, before netting the game's final tally with just over two minutes to play.
Two free-position goals from sophomore Devon Gibney (Hopkinton, Mass.) helped the Bobcats take the lead twice in the first half. She was 2-for-2 in the game on free-position attempts, joining Caroleo as the only two players to score with the free look.
Captain Katie Latonick (Severna Park, Md.) recorded an assist on Sunday against the Bears. She now has 68 total assists in her career. That total ranks ninth among active players in Div. I. Her 44 assists last year were a single-season program record.
