PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Quinnipiac University women's lacrosse team fell to Brown, 13-10, Sunday afternoon at Stevenson Field. Sophomore Marissa Caroleo (North Babylon, N.Y.) scored a Quinnipiac season-high four goals in the game, while junior Christine Sinnigen (Sudbury, Mass.) scored three times. The loss drops the Bobcats to 0-2 this season, marking just the first time in two years that the team has lost consecutive games. The Bears improve to 2-1 in 2010 with the win.
"We played very well today, but, unfortunately, Brown played better," head coach Danie Caro said. "I was pleased with our effort and intensity today. This is something we must build on moving forward."
The first half was evenly played with both teams exchanging scores for much of the period. Quinnipiac took a 3-2 lead on a Devon Gibney (Hopkinton, Mass.) free-position shot eight and a half minutes into the game. Gibney scored on another free-position attempt in the first, before Sinnigen netted two in the final 10 minutes of the half. Freshman Sarah Allen (Glastonbury, Conn.) assisted on Caroleo's first of the game and both Sinnigen goals for the first points of her career. A Paris Waterman free-position goal with three minutes remaining in the period gave the Bears a 7-6 lead at the half.
Junior defender Kaitlyn Kelly (North Massapequa, N.Y.) scored her first goal of the season and the fifth of her career just 25 seconds into the second half to tie the game at 7-7. After Brown scored two goals, Caroleo notched consecutive tallies just 59 seconds apart to again tie the game, this time at nine.
Four straight goals by the Bears in the final 11 minutes gave them the 13-9 advantage. Sinnigen again scored on another assist by Allen with 2:14 showing on the game clock. The lead, however, was too much for the Bobcats as Brown held on for the 13-10 win.
Allen and Caroleo each finished with four points in the game, with Allen collecting four assists and Caroleo scoring four times. Kelly collected a game- and career-high seven draw controls in the game, while also scoring once and picking up a team- and career-high three groundballs.
Sophomore Noelle Martello (Westerbury, N.Y.) turned aside a career-high 13 shots in the game, including making nine in the first half. Brown goalie Isabel Harvey needed to make just five saves in earning her second win of the year.
The Bobcats return to action at home on Thursday, Mar. 11 against Fairfield. The game, originally scheduled to be Quinnipiac season opener on Feb. 27 and cancelled due to inclement weather, will start at 3 p.m. from the Quinnipiac Field Hockey & Lacrosse Turf Field.
