Women's Lacrosse Drops Opener, 16-8, At UConn
STORRS, Conn. - The Quinnipiac University women's lacrosse team began its 2010 season with a 16-8 loss against in-state rival Connecticut Wednesday afternoon at the Sherman-Family Sports Complex. The Bobcats fall to 0-1 with the loss, their first to UConn in three seasons. The Huskies improved to 3-1 on the season with the victory, winning their third straight game after falling in their season opener.
"We didn't deserve to win today because we failed to execute our game plan," head coach Danie Caro said. "We need to regroup and clean up our game as we prepare to face Brown on Saturday. To their credit, UConn executed and got the job done."
The first half saw both teams exchanging goals for the first 20 minutes of play. Junior Lauren Matuszczak (East Longmeadow, Mass.) scored the game's opening goal just 1:41 into the contest. Fellow junior Christine Sinnigen (Sudbury, Mass.) and sophomore Devon Gibney (Hopkinton, Mass.) each picked up tallies midway through the first period to tie the game at different points.

Graduate student and team captain Katie Latonick (Severna Park, Md.) scored two goals in the first 11:17 of the second half. Following Latonick's second goal, the Huskies went on a 7-0 run to put the game out of reach.
Latonick and Matuszczak each scored their third goals of the game with in the final five minutes of the game. Jillian Cerar scored with 1:02 left in the game to seal the win, 16-8.
Senior Kaitlyn Kelly (North Massapequa, N.Y.) and sophomore Marissa Caroleo (North Babylon, N.Y.) were the only two Bobcats to collect more than one ground ball in the game. Kelly had a team-high three, while Caroleo, the 2009 NEC Rookie of the Year, picked up two in the game.
