Devon Gibney And Katie Latonick Honored By NEC
HAMDEN, Conn. Quinnipiac University women's lacrosse junior Katie Latonick (Severna Park, Md.) was named the Northeast Conference Co-Player of the Week, while freshman Devon Gibney (Hopkinton, Mass.) was honored as the league's Co-Rookie of the Week, the league office today announced. This marks the fourth consecutive week that the Bobcats have been honored with a weekly accolade from the NEC. Latonick shares the award with Sacred Heart's Carissa Hauser and Ashley Prizio of Long Island joins Gibney as the NEC's top rookie.
Latonick posted career-high figures during the Bobcats' weekend sweep of Bryant and Mount St. Mary's. Against the Bulldogs on Friday, Latonick set a Quinnipiac single-game record with eight assists, while also adding a goal in the 14-9 win. The nine-point performance was the third-best figure. Against the Mountaineers, the senior attacker netted two goals and added four assists to bring her weekend total to 12. This season, she leads Quinnipiac with 23 assists, good for second in the NEC in assists per game (2.56).
"Katie has really elevated her game in the last two weeks," said Head Coach Danie Caro. "She is playing with confidence and has developed into a leader on attack for us. I'm very pleased to see her recognized for her outstanding performance this past weekend."
Gibney recorded an assist on Friday, while adding a career-high three draw controls in the Bobcats' non-conference win over Bryant. She followed with a career day against Mount St. Mary's. The freshman midfielder had career highs in goals (4), assists (2) and points (6) as Quinnipiac handed the Mountaineers their first NEC loss of the season. This season, Gibney has 13 goals and four assists for 17 points.
"Devon has been solid for us all year, but really stepped up this weekend when we needed her to do so," Caro said. "She is a hard worker and has been really valuable for us in transition all season, so watching her put it all together and finish plays this weekend was very rewarding."
Quinnipiac returns to action on Thursday, April 9, as it travels to Loretto, Pa., to take on Saint Francis (Pa.). The Bobcats and the Red Flash are set to begin play at 3 p.m.
