HAMDEN, Conn. Freshman Marissa Caroleo (North Babylon, N.Y.) of the Quinnipiac University women's lacrosse team was named the Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week after a career performance against Long Island Sunday afternoon. Caroleo scored six goals and added an assist for seven points in the team's 22-10 win over the Blackbirds. This is the third consecutive week that a member of the Bobcats has been honored by the conference as Nicole Fiore (Monroe, Conn.) and Erin Coffey (Huntington, N.Y.) were named the Player and Defensive Player of the Week, respectively.
Caroleo scored the opening goal just 41 seconds into the game against Long Island. The freshman midfielder would score four more goals in the first half, including three in the Bobcats' 9-0 run that spanned more than 19 minutes. Her final goal of the first half came on the free-position shot in her only opportunity of the game. Caroleo recorded her assist on the second of three-straight goals by senior Ashley Valentine (Friendship, Md.) midway through the second half. She netted her sixth and final goal of the game with 10 minutes remaining, matching a season-best mark amongst NEC players for goals in a contest.
"Marissa played a really solid game on Sunday," said Head Coach Danie Caro. "She does a lot of things that don't show up in the stats, but make her a true all-around midfielder. We're really looking forward to helping her continue to develop her game and reach her potential."
Quinnipiac returns to action on Friday, April 3, when they host Bryant at the Quinnipiac Field Hockey & Lacrosse Turf Field. The Bobcats and Bulldogs are scheduled to play at 4 p.m.
