CANTON, N.Y. – The No. 8/9 Quinnipiac women's ice hockey team lost to St. Lawrence, 3-0, in an ECAC Hockey matchup from Appleton Arena. Two first period goals by the Saints helped St. Lawrence improve to 10-16-3 and 9-6-3 in ECAC Hockey while Quinnipiac drops to 17-5-8 overall and 8-4-6 in league play.
The Bobcats were victimized once again by an early goal as they allowed the game's first tally for the fourth time in five games. St. Lawrence's Kailee Heidersbach picked up her first of two goals on the day as she poked home a rebound off the initial shot in transition from Jessica Hon.
St. Lawrence and Heidersbach continued their first period dominance with another goal six minutes. The sophomore forward was in the right place at the right time once again as Kayla Raniwsky wrapped around the back of Laden's net and put a shot on-goal. Laden denied the initial surge but couldn't push aside the rebound goal for Heidersbach to make it 2-0 St. Lawrence after the first period.
Quinnipiac's power play struggles continued in the second period as two opportunities, including a 26 second 5-on-3 advantage, we killed off by the Saints defense and goalie Carmen MacDonald. The Bobcats have now gone seven straight games without recording a power-play goal and are 0-for-25 during the seven-game span.
Despite the lack of success on the man-advantage, Quinnipiac generated several quality opportunities starting with senior Kelly Babstock (Mississauga, Ontario) banged a shot in transition off the post while MacDonald denied shot-after-shot including several in prime scoring opportunities for the Bobcats as the score remained 2-0 heading into the third period.
Mel Desrochers added another goal for St. Lawrence at 8:41 in the third period while MacDonald picked up 21 saves in the game for her second shutout of the season.
Quinnipiac's final home weekend series of the 2013-14 regular season is up next as the Bobcats welcome Yale on Friday and Brown on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. with Senior Day festivities to take part before the first puck drop.
