HAMDEN, Conn. – The No. 5/6 nationally-ranked Quinnipiac women's ice hockey team fell to No. 8 Clarkson, 3-0, on Saturday from High Point Solutions Arena. The Bobcats did their best to limit a potent offense in the Golden Knights' attack but couldn't fight them off as two power-play goals and a 23 save shutout from two-time reigning ECAC Hockey Goaltender of the year Erica Howe helped lift Clarkson past Quinnipiac. The Bobcats' eight game unbeaten streak was snapped while their record falls to 10-2-4 (3-2-3 ECAC Hockey) and Clarkson jumps to 12-3-2 (5-2-1 ECAC Hockey).
The 2013 Preseason Coaches' ECAC Hockey Poll Champion Clarkson outshot the Bobcats, 26-23, which marks the first time Quinnipiac has been outshot by an opponent all season. Junior goalie Chelsea Laden (Lakeville, Minn.) did her best with 23 saves in net but couldn't overcome the three way tandem of the Golden Knights' Jamie Lee Rattray (two goals), Erin Ambrose (one goal, one assist) and Carly Mercer (two assists).
Clarkson picked up their first goal of the afternoon with a goal from Rattray at 11:22. Vanessa Gagnon found Corie Jacobson at the point in the Bobcats' defensive end. Her shot was deflected in front and picked up by Rattray who quickly shot a one-timer past Laden stick side to pick up a 1-0 lead.
Going into the locker room down 1-0 and on the penalty kill, the Bobcats had a tall task to order and couldn't prevent Clarkson from scoring on the man advantage once again off the stick of Rattray. Mercer passed back to Ambrose at center ice and the sophomore defender alertly found Rattray open skating along the blue line. Rattray flashed some top-notch speed in working her way around the Bobcat defenders and beat Laden five-hole to put her team up two goals.
The Bobcats had some opportunities including a three-on-one break that went by the waste side and any legitimate scoring chances in the crease were turned aside by Howe who picked up her second straight shutout.
Clarkson added another goal late as Ambrose's shot from the point made its way past multiple defenders and past Laden to make it a 3-0 game late and put the score out of reach for Quinnipiac.
The No. 5/6 Bobcats need to regroup quickly as they take on Princeton in a crucial ECAC Hockey Tuesday night matchup starting at 7:00 pm from Hobey Baker Memorial Rink.
