Brittany Lyons Selected to Play for Team USA in 2013 Ball Hockey World Championships Held in Toronto
HAMDEN, Conn. – Former Quinnipiac women's ice hockey forward Brittany Lyons (Canton, Mass.) was recently chosen to represent Team USA in the 2013 Ball Hockey World Championships held in Toronto Canada at the Maple Leafs Garden from June 4-9. Team USA will be looking to improve upon their fourth place finish at the 2009 World Championships and dethrone Slovakia and Canada who've either won or finished runner-up at all previous four World Championships.
"I went to the tryouts earlier this year with a friend and they called me into the office after the first game and asked me to be on the team," Lyons said. "There are girls from Harvard, Boston Univ., Syracuse and other Div. I schools so this should be an amazing tournament. I can't wait to play."
This will be the first glimpse of international hockey for Lyons since high school when she was invited to the Olympic Training Center after finishing an illustrious career with Canton High School becoming the program's all-time leading scorer in both hockey and lacrosse. This continues what has been a life-altering week for Lyons who also just recently agreed to terms with the Neuberg Highlanders Division I team playing out in Austria in the European Women's Hockey League (EWHL).
One of the more dynamic goal scorers in Quinnipiac history, Lyons finished her four-year career with 69 points and 39 career tallies. The 39 goals is the third-most all-time for the Bobcats and she is coming off a breakout senior year in which she recorded a single-season career high 16 goals, also the fourth-most ever in a single-season at Quinnipiac. Her tenacity and leadership skills on and off the ice made her one of the team's most-respected players and her contributions will surely be missed moving forward for the Bobcats.
Lyons will be joining Team USA in pursuit of the 2013 World Championship in ball hockey as they will be competing against teams from the following nations: Canada, Czech Republic, Greece, Italy, Slovakia, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. The playing system is divided into a round robin pool followed by a semifinal grouping and then a competition for the title "World Street & Ball Hockey Champion 2013."
The International Street & Ball Hockey Federation (ISBHF) resides over the tournament field and sets forth the rules that govern play. Ball Hockey is structured the same as ice hockey with 22 players plus three goalkeepers permitted for each team. The sport is patterned after and closely related to ice hockey, expect the game is played on foot on a non-ice surface, player equipment is different and a ball is used instead of a hockey puck. The same rules of icing, offside and penalties all exist in ball hockey.
The 2013 ISBHF Women's World Championships will be held in the Maple Leafs Garden with Team USA kicking off pool play against Italy on June 4th followed by a matchup against defending champion Slovakia on June 5th and Switzerland on June 6th. Every team advances to advanced pool play and then the winners will move on to the Semifinals and ultimately the World Championship game.
