NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Members of the Quinnipiac women's ice hockey team spent some time at the Benjamin Jepson School in New Haven as a part of Quinnipiac's Positive Play Initiative designed to encourage student-athlete community service. The Bobcats led class discussions on different aspects of being a student-athlete and how to best manage one's time holding both responsibilities.

Quinnipiac's senior assistant captain Breann Frykas, junior assistant captain Amanda Colin, juniors Shelby Wignall and Olivia Brackett, and sophomores Anna Borgfeldt and Morgan Fritz-Ward all took part in the discussions. The teammates split up into pairs and gave talks to the sixth through eighth grade classrooms at the Benjamin Jepson School. Brackett led a discussion on time management and the most important tips for student to know as they become more involved in sports.

"Being a student-athlete you have to make sure you do all of your homework," Brackett said. "Homework is very very important. Tests, quizzes, and showing up for school are all very important as well. For us we have to do all of our assignments or else we aren't allowed to play."

Each classroom held around 20 children and the teachers even joined in on discussions when necessary. The Bobcats were also there to promote their home games for that weekend in which numerous Jepson students came out to root on the Bobcats to a win over Maine.

Other highlights of the discussions included the benefits of participating in activities outside of school as Frykas said, "being on a team or playing an instrument is very good to make sure you are doing something outside of school to make you a well-rounded person. It's a great way to practice time-management because you have to balance practices, games, and then homework on top."

The Quinnipiac women's ice hockey team will be in action this weekend with a pair of ECAC Hockey matchups against Harvard on Friday at 7 p.m. and Dartmouth at 4 p.m. Both games will be up at the High Point Solutions Arena at the TD Bank Sports Center.
