HAMDEN, Conn. – Quinnipiac women’s ice hockey sophomore forward Kelly Babstock (Mississauga, Ontario) and freshman forward Nicole Kosta (Mississauga, Ontario) were named ECAC Hockey Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively, as announced by the league on Tuesday, Feb. 21. This marks Babstock’s second Player of the Week selection of the season, and fourth of her career, while the Rookie of the Week honor for Kosta marks her first career selection.

Babstock finished the regular season with one of her best weekends of the year, recording six total points (five goals, one assist) in games against Union and Rensselaer on Friday, Feb. 17 and Saturday, Feb. 18. On Friday’s 6-2 win against the Dutchwomen, Babstock led the offensive outburst with two goals and an assist, becoming the program’s all-time leading goal scorer in the process (with 44), as she passed Elyse Cole’s ’08, career total of 43 goals. She factored in the game-winning third goal, earning the second assist, before tallying two-straight goals to extend the Bobcats’ lead to 5-1.

She followed up Friday’s performance with her first hat trick of the season (fourth of her career) during the team’s 5-1 win over Rensselaer on Saturday. Babstock’s back-to-back goals in the second period increased Quinnipiac’s lead to 3-0, while her empty net third goal of the game in the third stanza capped off the terrific weekend for the sophomore.

Kosta earned Rookie of the Week honors following a five point weekend (one goal, four assists) for the Bobcats. She matched Babstock’s team-high three points on Friday evening against Union (one goal, two assists), which included scoring the team’s second goal and assisting on the fourth and fifth tallies of the game. Kosta dished out the game-winning assist the following afternoon against Rensselaer, before adding a second assist on the team’s fourth goal of the contest.

Overall, Babstock (36 points) and Kosta (27 points) rank first on the team in points, while Babstock’s 17 goals and Kosta’s 22 assists are both team-highs. Babstock currently ranks tied for seventh among ECAC Hockey skaters with 26 league points (13 goals, 13 assists), whereas Kosta’s 16 league assists has her tied for fourth among all ECAC Hockey skaters. Kosta’s .90 points per game ranks her second among all ECAC Hockey freshman skaters, and is currently ninth overall among all NCAA Division I Women’s Ice Hockey Freshman skaters.

Babstock, Kosta and the Bobcats return to action this upcoming weekend when they travel to face No. 3-seeded Clarkson in the first round of the ECAC Hockey Post Season Tournament. Quinnipiac faces Clarkson at 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 24, then on Saturday, Feb. 25 at 4 p.m. and again (if necessary) on Sunday, Feb. 26th at 4 p.m.
