ERIE, Pa. – Sophomore forward Elena Orlando's (Chico, Calif.) goal midway through the second period was all the No.9-ranked Quinnipiac women's ice hockey team needed to defeat No.8-ranked Mercyhurst, as the Bobcats shutout the Lakers, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon at Mercyhurst Ice Center. Junior goaltender Victoria Vigilanti (Woodbridge, Ontario) made 24 saves en route to her 15th career shutout, leading Quinnipiac (1-1) to its first victory of the season. Mercyhurst falls to 1-1 on the year.

Orlando netted Quinnipiac's first goal of the season, and only goal of the contest, at the 11:56 mark into the second period. Sophomore forward Emily MacKinnon (Kirkland, Quebec) and senior defender Bethany Dymarczyk (Hamden, Conn.) were each credited with an assist on the score.

Quinnipiac came out firing in the first period, taking a season-high 15 shots in the frame. Despite three power-play opportunities, Mercyhurst goaltender Hillary Pattenden turned away all shots faced in the period to keep the game scoreless after 20 minutes of play.

The Bobcats played an energized game on both ends of the ice, outshooting the Lakers 34-24 on the afternoon. For the second-straight game sophomore forward Kelly Babstock (Mississauga, Ontario) and junior forward Brittany Lyons (Canton, Mass.) led Quinnipiac in shots, taking seven and five, respectively.

Vigilanti stayed poised in net as the shots increased during each period, making five saves in the first period, nine in the second and 10 in the third. The junior goaltender is accustomed to clean-sheet performances, as she finished the 2010-11 season as the ECAC Women's Ice Hockey leader with nine shutouts on the year.

Quinnipiac did well to stay out of the penalty box, committing only three penalties compared to Mercyhurst's six.

Quinnipiac returns to action when it hosts its first home contests of the season against Maine on Friday, Oct. 7 at 7 p.m. and again on Saturday, Oct. 8 at 1 p.m.
