HAMDEN, Conn. - Freshmen forwards Kelly Babstock (Mississauga, Ontario) and Erica Uden Johansson (Sundsvall, Sweden) have been highlighted in the January 2011 issue of New England Hockey Journal. The article, written by Mike Zhe, speaks to the immediate impact and success both fellow first-liners have come across during the first-half of the season.
Babstock and Uden Johansson are each having quite the rookie campaign this season, and have combined to account for more than one third (36 percent) of the team's total points this season. Babstock leads all NCAA Division I Women's Ice Hockey freshmen in goals (20), assists (20) and points (40) and is tied for first in the country with seven game-winning goals. Her talents have brought her four ECAC Hockey/MLX Skates Rookie of the Week and one Player of the Week honors, as well as being named Quinnipiac Female Athlete of the Month for the months of November and December. Babstock was most recently named to Sports Illustrated's January 17 edition of "Faces in the Crowd". The selection was only the second time in Quinnipiac Athletics history that a student-athlete was chosen for the magazine's weekly feature.
Uden Johansson, who came to Quinnipiac touting a resume that included playing for her home country Sweden in the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics, is currently second on the team in goals (nine), points (21) and is tied for second with 12 assists. In ECAC Hockey, Uden Johansson ranks tied for fourth in assists and is fifth overall in points. She netted the first hat trick for Quinnipiac this season on October 12, 2010 in a 5-0 victory over Sacred Heart. The performance earned her ECAC Hockey/MLX Skates Rookie of the Week honors for the week of October 12, 2010. The freshman skater also ranks eighth in points per game (1.00) among rookies in NCAA Division I Women's Ice Hockey.
