HAMDEN, Conn. - Quinnipiac women's ice hockey junior forward Kate Wheeler (Oakville, Ontario) and freshman forward Kelly Babstock (Mississauga, Ontario) were named ECAC Hockey/MLX Skates Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively, as announced by ECAC Hockey on Tuesday, Nov. 30.
Wheeler collected two goals and three assists over the weekend to earn MVP honors in the Nutmeg Classic Tournament. On Friday, Nov. 26 against Sacred Heart, Wheeler compiled one goal and three assists, as Quinnipiac routed the Pioneers, 9-1. In the championship game against Yale on Saturday, Nov. 27, Wheeler scored the game's first goal with just five seconds remaining in the first period. The Bobcats went on to win the game, 2-1, to earn its second-ever Nutmeg Classic Tournament championship.
This is the third ECAC Hockey/MLX Skates Player of the Week selection for Wheeler, as she was last selected on October, 26.
Babstock captured her third Rookie of the Week award after her record breaking performance of two goals and four assists against Sacred Heart on Friday, Nov. 26. The Mississauga, Ontario native eclipsed the women's ice hockey all-time points (30) and assists (17) records in a season, while also scoring the most points in a game (six) in Quinnipiac's 10 year history.
Babstock retains her lead as the NCAA Division I Women's Ice Hockey points leader (33) and is second in the country with 18 assists. She ranks ninth in the country in points per game (third among rookies) with 1.83, 13th in the country with .83 goals per game, and seventh in the country with 1.00 assists per game.
This is also the third ECAC Hockey/MLX Skates Player of the Week selection for Babstock, as she was previously nominated on November, 16.
