HAMDEN, Conn. - Sophomore forward Brittany Lyons' (Canton, Mass.) second period goal propelled the Quinnipiac women's ice hockey team to a 2-1 victory over Yale and earn its second-ever Nutmeg Classic tournament championship on Saturday evening at the TD Bank Sports Center. The victory improves Quinnipiac's overall record to 11-6-1, while Yale falls to 3-7-2 on the season.

Tournament MVP junior forward Kate Wheeler (Oakville, Ontario) scored with six seconds remaining in the first period to send the Bobcats into the locker room leading 1-0. Junior defender Bethany Dymarczyk (Hamden, Conn.) took a slap shot from the point as Wheeler screened Yale goaltender Jackee Snikeris. Wheeler found the puck amongst the scrum and flicked in her eighth goal of the season. Freshman forward Erica Uden Johansson (Sundsvall, Sweden) was credited with her 10th assist on the season, while Dymarczyk picked up her ninth helper.

Yale fought back in the second period, scoring just over three minutes into the frame to tie the score, 1-1. On the score, sophomore forward Alyssa Zupon netted her fourth goal of the season. Assisted were awarded to junior forward Aleca Hughes and senior forward Bray Ketchum.

Quinnipiac regained the lead, 2-1, as Lyons scored what would amount to be the game-winning goal at the 11:56 mark into the second period. Lyons came streaking from behind the net and unleashed a wrister towards the cage. Snikeris made partial contact with her blocker, but it was not enough, as the puck found its way into the net. Freshman defender Shelby Wignall (Hamilton, Ontario) collected her third assist of the season on the tally.

Yale pulled Snikeris with a minute and twenty seconds remaining in the contest, yet was unable to score on the six on five advantage. Sophomore goaltender Victoria Vigilanti (Woodbridge, Ontario) made three saves during that span to preserve the victory for the Bobcats, capping off a tremendous evening in which she stopped a 22 shots. Snikeris made 41 saves for the Bulldogs on the evening.
