Women's Ice Hockey Defeats Colgate, 2-1
HAMILTON, N.Y. - Senior forward Evelina Husar scored her second goal of the season and the game-winner as the Quinnipiac University women's ice hockey team defeated Colgate, 2-1, Saturday afternoon. The Bobcats earned two points in ECAC Hockey with the win as their conference record improves to 8-4-6 on the year with a 15-8-7 overall mark. The Raiders' overall record drops to 9-17-4 on the year, with a 5-9-4 record in the ECAC.
The Bobcats opened up the scoring early on a power play at the 3:17 mark of the first period. Tucked low on the left boards freshman Heather Hughes (Stouffville, Ontario) ripped a shot that snuck in between the goaltender's right pad and the goalpost for the 1-0 lead. Freshman Felica Vieweg (Port Orange, Fla.) earned her fourth assist of the season on the play, as her original shot from the right point was deflected to Hughes. The goal was Hughes' team-leading 12th of the year.
Senior forward Evelina Husar (Eskilstuna, Sweden) scored her second of the year at the 5:24 mark of the second period to put the Bobcats up 2-0. Freshman Brittany Lyons broke through the Colgate defense above the faceoff circle and took it in on net. Her shot on was deflected but senior Husar followed the puck and snuck it into the left corner for the goal. Lyons recorded her second assist of the year on the play.
Colgate pulled within one on a power play-opportunity 40 seconds into the third period. Set up in the Bobcats defensive zone, freshman Jenna Klynstra collected the puck in the right faceoff circle and fired it into the opposite net for her fourth goal of the season. Katie Stewart and Hannah Milan were credited with assists on the play.
The Raiders continued to test the Bobcats defense throughout the third period, taking a total of 14 shots on goal, but goaltender Victoria Vigilanti (Woodbridge, Ontario) didn't allow the equalizer. Vigilanti earned her 14th win of the season on the day, and recorded 28 saves. Colgate goaltenders Kim Sass and Lisa Plenderleith split time in net, with Sass making 27 saves, and Plenderleith stopping five in the loss.
Quinnipiac returns to the TD Bank Sports Center next weekend as they host St. Lawrence and Clarkson in an ECAC Hockey-weekend series. The Bobcats will host the Saints on Friday at 7 p.m., and the Golden Knights on Saturday at 4 p.m.
